No big deal, as long as we are warned when a red shell's coming I see no problem with this "new" mechanic.

Or..

The gamepad screen could serve as a rear mirror so we could deploy our items at the right time.

If I recall correctly it does warn you so that's good. Problem is when 2 Red Shells one after another are coming for you at once! D:

Unless they changed it since E3, then the gamepad acts like the second screen of the DS/3DS. However, instead of a zoomed in view of the track, we have a horn, which, while hilarious, does nothing to aid us in the race like a zoomed in view would. :L
There's still the full track view and it always shows what positions players are in and what items they have, so Blue Shell evasion is still a thing!

So yeah it could be that they made some changes. We have nothing solid about it though. So just wait for the reviewers to clear things up. Maybe there are 2 modes available, oldschool and  easy.

They clearly made some changes lol. And as I said at the end of the post that bumped this thread up, I expect things to be cleared up the next time MK8 is shown. Besides there is no harm in talking about what we do know and making speculations n such. That's the whole point of this forum afterall!

Then to come back to the actual question of this thread; I don't know.

I am someone who is heavily utilizing his items so it would probably make things harder and less enjoyable for me because I would lose the edge I have against weaker players. I still don't think they will go through with such a huge change. And if they do, the outrage of the gaming community would bring it back via patch.

An outrage over this? o_O
Don't forget they already did this with Double Dash!

If this sticks, 1st place will have a awfull lot of trouble remaining first. Gives you more chance to catch up but also frustratingly make the ''luck'' factor alot more important.

I understand that when first place, since pretty much all items that you get you can use them as shield, only the blue shell were a threat. Remember that feeling when you got powerlessly hit by a blue shell? Well get ready to feel this feeling a whole lot more with red shell now.

But it may not be as bad as we think depending on balance. You still get the triple shell, bannanas and the tanooki tail as protection(assuming the tanooki tail is back)... And maybe some new items we dont know about. If they make it that you have a much higher chance of getting the bannanas or tanooki when your in first place, it should balance things perfectly between being powerless to bad luck all the time and the always shielded that was in MK7.

Hm.... I played a lot of Double Dash back then but that was some time ago. Seems it didn't impact me that much that time. Probably because of the added "Double" feature.

In the latest trailer, the characters are seen holding shells, bombs, etc. in their hands, presumably when you hold down the item button, readying them for usage. This would be a huge change from norm, being that items are dragged behind you, as it makes blocking incomming attacks a lot harder. Of course items like triple shells n bananas will likely still be dragged behind ya/circling around you, but singular items wont be. Can't say I'll be very happy with this change if it sticks. =/

It is more realistic i guess. It does bring more skill into the game, so first place has to fire his weapons instead of have them dragging behind.

Gameplay videos from E3 showed a set of triple bananas, a single banana, and single green and red shells that could all be dragged behind you as always. Of course, the E3 demo didn't have the blue shell so obviously stuff could/will have changed from that demo...but still, it at least gives some hope.

Like Rol was saying, you can still block Red Shells by dropping an item behind you at the right time, so you're not exactly powerless, it just takes more effort to defend yourself now.

I can't really say it'll bring more skill to the game, as while it does take more effort to defend, attacking is now easier, namely with Green n Red shells. Normally you'd have to try and angle your green shells to hit the opponent on his sides, but now you can just fire it right behind, and unless there's a green shell buzzer, they wont see it coming. Red Shells are almost completely herp derp now, as there's always a chance it'll hit the opponent, especially if you're right behind them, the opponent is turning, or the opponent is gliding.
