Retro needs a second team, if they did we could get a game every 1.5-2 years or so from them instead of 3 years.

Feb 2014-DKC

Aug 2015-Metroid

Nov 2016-New IP or Star Fox

It could be worse, like a Blizzard game.......... Forever should be on the end of the title of most of them.

I think old Rare is much better than Retro for my personal tastes. Retro needs to show they can produce the best games on the system. It's only my opinion but I think Rare produced some of the best games for the N64. Metroid & DKC don't do it for me personally. They are talented and that is clear to see though. I just hope they do something new next time but I'm expecting Metroid after DKCTF.

That's funny, I was just thinking about this. Retro is definitely the new Rare, although Retro doesn't turn out games as quickly as Rare did during its glory days.

The author is also right about Retro topping Rare in its current form, but failing (so far) to top Rare of old. But the future is bright.

I think that's just the transition of the video game industry. Back in the N64 days, games were cheaper and shorter to make, now (even when they are small) they are more expensive and take more time to make. If the Rare of old were still around they wouldn't be making as many games as before.

dont forger MK 7 3Ds? for me Retro DKC is beter than DKC Rare! Metroid Prime is a masterpiece

It's not big enough to be the new Rare.

Rare made 11 games for the N64 alone, in a period of just 5 or so years. Of these, about 2/3 were among the best-selling and/or most critically acclaimed games for the platform. And you've also got half a dozen or so handheld games in the same timeframe.

Retro has so far made four games over the course of two platforms. Even if you discount Rare's "minor" games like Mickey Speedway USA and handheld titles, that's only a fraction of the output.

The Nintendo-affiliated Rare of 1994 to 2001 is something that might be impossible to replicate. The closest Nintendo can do to recreating something like Rare is developing strong bonds with a number of Western studios. Fortunately, Retro is not the only one they're working with. Studios like Monster Games, the creators of Pilotwings Resort and the 3DS version of DKCR, and Next Level Games, who made the Punch-Out reboot and Luigi's Mansion 2, also have contributed heavily to Nintendo's successes in recent years.

Between these three North American studios, the only thing that Nintendo is sorely lacking is a solid shooter studio that could replicate the success of the N64 FPS's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Perhaps Nintendo needs to create a new internal team, staffed by the makers of previous FPS games. Even if the result is no Halo, it can at least be a Killzone.

MK7 was only partially developed by Retro. Also, MK7, while a good game isn't one of my favorite series from Nintendo either. I don't think it's a Retro problem as in lack of talent but the series that they have chosen to go with are lacking for me. Metroid Prime looks to be an awesome game for Adventure / Shooter fans but I never could get into the games. (Same with Zelda)

I'm already thinking this for years.

Retro only did the already mostly-designed retro courses for that game, which I think is ironic. The game's engine, characters, racing, new tracks, music, etc, were all done by Nintendo EAD I think.
