Forums - Gaming - I don't think PS4 demand is as high as we are lead to believe.

Although no fan of ebay think it is a pretty good indicator of demand as a whole. It stands to reason that if people cannot find a console to purchase at a retail establishment, whether online or at a brick and mortar store, they will turn to ebay. In such situations that will, therefore, drive the prices up. I personally try to avoid buying from ebay unless it is for something rare and there is few, if any, other options available. I have been covering the console launch for a blog and the demand has obviously been quite high since launch for both the Xbox One and the PS4. In my travels I have yet to see the PS4 readily available at any retail location while seeing the Xbox One available intermittently.

Without knowing what kind of production number either company is knocking out it is hard to say say how exactly demand is exceeding supply with any accuracy. We can really only go by what we see available both in stores and online and try to correlate that with the numbers we do know.

For the aforementioned article I check stock at anywhere from 6 to 8 major online retailers multiple times daily as well as follow the community at nowinstock and other stock check type sites to get an idea of how easy to pick up either console for an average person. I have also set email alerts for most major retailers for when stock becomes available. Until yesterday the PS4 was simply not available for any length of time since launch. Amazon had it twice since launch and sold out in 10 minutes and 34 minutes both times. Best Buy, Walmart, and Target sold out in a similar fashion. The XBox One has been available several times and sold out as well albeit at a much slower pace. Now again, without knowing how many are being produced that really does not mean very much. It seems to me that there has certainly been more consistent stock on the Xbox One but I have also noted that it highly depends on where you are located in the U.S. at least. We know it is being outsold but perhaps Microsoft is also producing much more consoles.

It certainly does not surprise me that the ebay prices would drop for Sony's console today since Walmart had their biggest shipment of it yesterday and Best Buy also had a plethora available for much of the day. Reading through the comments at nowinstock many people that have been looking for one did not pass up the opportunity of snatching it when it became available after seeing how quickly they have been selling out over the last few weeks.

It will be very interesting to see now what happens to those prices at ebay as we inch closer to Christmas. Clearly people want these next gen systems and if Sony and Microsoft have produced enough for the rush those looking to make a substantial profit on ebay could be disappointed. If stock dries up, though, and the desperate need a console quickly they will no doubt drive up prices at both ebay and CL which will certainly make those sellers happy.

Personally, because of a cancelled trip, I found myself in the position of having an extra Xbox One and PS4. Since they were gifts I will now not need until February I will probably try to sell them if there is a shortage so we can make someone happy for the Holidays. Although, I am not going to try to make money off either one, rather just cover my costs and hopefully gain some karma in the process.

Well, my first post at this community and it seems like some good stuff here to read and talk about. I look forward to checking out more. Many of you seem quite knowledgeable and make some excellent points. Cheers!

Its impressive because so many on ebay are struggling to do the same.

Looking at ebay again I see many ending and struggling to get beyond $450, most end under $500. After costs like shipping, ebay fees, and paypal fees there isn't much if any profit for the seller. Basically, a waste of time.

Why do you continue this mantra when youve been continually proven wrong with selling price and on top of that shipping isnt taken out of the cost... its added on. As in the buyer has to pay more than what thE auction closes at. If i didnt know any better Id call it trolling

Well, much as I want a ps4 at some point in the future, there's no way in hell i'd pay above rrp for the opportunity to play a slightly better version of AC4 at this point in time.

Some people thought console X would do Y. However, that's not true because of evidence Z*, therefore console X isn't as [insert qualifier] as we are led to believe.

*evidence may not be valid.

Even with shipping included I often don't see people paying $500. Some sellers have been doing free shipping as well.

I have been proven wrong? I think many people in this thread don't even get my point.

You've been shown the average over the last two weeks and how high it is over the standard selling price but all you keep doing is just sleuthing around for yourself and saying you don't see anyone making those prices.  Don't you think that the average over all PS4 sales on Ebay is a more meaningful analysis than "I looked at 20 and this is what I saw"?

...

As I stated in my original reply, with the huge shipments to both Best Buy and Walmart yesterday those ebay prices are going to be significantly less today than they were two days ago. Today would not be a good day to list for the PS4 for those looking to profit. If Sony's new console returns to the strained stock of the last few weeks those ebay prices will go back up to where they were a few days ago. It really is not all that difficult to understand. Most of these types of purchaces on either CL or ebay are for those desperate with no alternative. Right now with a little effort you can buy one at regular price. In a few days? Who knows. It obviously depends on how much product Microsoft and Sony have out there and we just do not know that.

Although new here I am sensing that you really want to drive the point home about these ebay prices and how that possibly correlates to the demand not being as high as people (not sure who exactly) have indicated. As has been pointed out numerous times today's prices will naturally be lower than they were because of a recent stock replinishment. Perhaps this is the first you have looked at the ebay prices or perhaps you just brought it up today while prices are lower because it would elevate your argument. Not really sure but it really is pretty simple to see what has transpired in terms of demand and how that equates to prices on ebay.

In any event, since it is of interest you should probably track those prices for a few days to see what happens as the recent to major retailers dimishes. Provided, of course, they do not recieve another large shipment. As long as they have stock those ebay prices will not rise.

Gamestop said they had 2.3mil preorders to fulfill. If that's not super high demand I don't what is. The end.

Interesting/amazing!

Do you have a source for this huge statement ?

He created this thread to present the PS4 in a bad light. Some presented very valid counter points or some did not take him seriously (such as myself). This is a fail thread. Nothing more.

Puggs, this is low-level amateur work. You have been here for four years. Have you no shame?

You can do better. VGChartz deserves better. It's time to step your game up, seriously.
