Forums - Gaming - Do You Consider Wii U A Current/Next-gen console?

What do you think?

Wii U is 7th gen! 134 16.18%

Wii U is 8th gen! 584 70.53%

Wii U is gay! 39 4.71%

Wii U is straight! 14 1.69%

Wii U is bisexual! 55 6.64%

Specs don't matter. It's a successor to a 7th gen console, thus it's 8th gen. Plus the graphical jump from Wii is pretty big, and 1080p solidify's it as 8th gen. I didn't see 1080p on XBO.

Exactly.  Wii U is a generational leap in performace over it's predecessor.   It exists as an alternative to X1 and PS4, and will exist alongside them the same as X1 and PS4 exist alongside each other.  It isn't even reasonable to argue that Wii U isn't an eighth generation console.  It's a shame this thread needs to exist, but apparently it does in order to educate people.

Specs do not matter.  Not one bit.

If the criteria for 8th generation is simply launch date then does that mean the revised 360 model launched late last year is 8th gen? Does a basic chinese cheap console that runs nes games but was just released last week also considered to be 8th gen despite having a performance level of the NES.

It's clear release date is a truly awful way of linking consoles together. One console could be a 1000x more powerful but they share the same generation. What is the point of that. So Ouya, wii u and PS4 are the same generation despite the Ouya not really being competitive with the games that were available on the original playstation.

Clearly the wii u is eighth generation but its performance level fits in better with the 2 most powerful consoles of the 7th generation.

I personally think it would be better to link consoles to their performance level. Both ps4 and xbox one have gpu's with over a teraflop of performance. They are the first two consoles to have that performance level. That means something. The wii u is down at 176gflops at the same approximate level as 360 and PS3 which were the first two consoles to break 100 gflops of performance. The gamecube only had 8 gflops of performance but the wii being a gamecube ran 50% faster managed to get to 12 gflops so it was in the same performance over 10 gflops performance level as the Original Xbox which was about 20 gflops. So you could represent consoles by gflops performance with each generation going up by a factor of 10. Maybe the next generation will exceed 10 teraflops.

It's unfair to consumers for the wii u to be represented as an eighth generation console as if that puts it in the same performance class as xbox one and ps4.

Actually we don't know. Only some randoms in gaf has claimed that.

I'm not sure what 'randoms' means in that context but the x-ray analysis yielded a possible figure of between 176 -352 gflops and we all assumed 352 gflops at the beginning but then other factors like the built in embedded wii gpu, the gamepad screen compression engine and if I remember rightly the arm processor(s) and you ended up with realising the core modern gpu section was smaller and the power consumption is absolutely tiny, less than ps3 or xbox 360 despite being on the same fabrication process. Depressing as it is, it is likely 176 gflops. A huge factor is also wii u performance itself. It is struggling to match 360 and PS3 and often runs games with inferior frame rates and sometimes inferior graphics quality. Lets not forget that the radeon gpu in the wii u has far better archiitecture than 360 or PS3.  If the wii u gpu really is 352 gflops something is going horribly wrong inside the wii u. I think the nearest Radeon equivilant to wii u is the mobility Radeon 6400M series and its not capable of reaching  352 gflops at 550mhz yet appears to match the wii u gpu spec in all areas. Yes its not confirmed its 176gflops but there is a lot more evidence for it than 352 gflops.

WiiU's performance level is well above what the PS3 and the Xbox is capable of.

Heck put Killzone Shadowfall in 720p and take off some motion effects and it'll run at 60fps on the WiiU. Giant backgrounds you cant touch and all.

As an owner of a projector and all three consoles I'd have to completely disagree with you. Not that such evidence has to be personal as eurogamer faceoff's have shown about 90% of wii u games run worse than 360 and PS3 versions. There simply is no evidence to support your claim. Not that I'm claiming the wii u isn't superior in some areas but overall its at 360/PS3 level and thats a huge compliment to the wii u because quite frankly it isn't performing at their level yet.

If you look at almost any recent wii u game it is struggling to match the frame rates of 360 and PS3. Often there may be minor visual effects missing from wii u versions of games too. Ghosts below but same applies to games like resident evil, ass creed black flag etc. The wii u has yet to prove itself as capable as ps3 and 360. The wii u is meant to be exceptionally easy to develop for and we are now in year into its life and its still struggling to match the earlier consoless just as it did at the beginning.

Mario 3D World while visually attractive is not technically impressive at all. Windwaker is  upscaled  gamecube game. While I am keen to see the wii u perform to a higher level I've yet to see that happeen.

Technically the Wii U doesn't have a gen. It's not a seventh gen console and it's not next gen in terms of graphics.

Other than being released in the 8th gen, it's genless.

It's Nintendo's 8th-generation offering. It's got weaker graphics, like a 7th-generation machine. Nintendo's 7th generation offering had graphics like a 6th generation machine. There's coming a time soon when folks are going to have to stop worrying about graphics, as they become more and more trivial in the face of high-end PC gaming performance. And no, I am NOT a high-end PC gamer, so I am not championing that. It's just true. ALL 3 boxes launched behind the curve this generation, for the first time. And certainly not the last time. The gap can only get wider, unless someone makes a $1500 console (and still take a loss on each one).

We ALL wanted it, now we ALL are finally going to get SHENMUE III !!! Let us REJOICE IN THE STREETS!!!

I think the Wii U has no sexuality at all!

Wii Unick? (Enuch)

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Shigeru Miyamoto

It's current gen NOW. As are the One and the 4.

And what you're using to back up your evidence is last gen games designed for CPU centric devices, ported over rather quickly, removing all traces of screen tearing due to the fact that all these games are forced to use Vsync right? And the launch games were only using 1 core to boot.

In most cases the frames only dip very bad in breif areas

WiiU's definetly a jump over the last gen.

+The console renders whats ever on the gamepad too.

And 3D World isnt technically impressive(what this supposed to mean? Scale? Because there is a lot of things you can't interact wtih in games like Killzone for instance) because its a multiplayer game. It rarely ever drops frames. At all. and this is with several characters on the screen ( 16 or so things running about in the screen) That's definetly a reason why the game is 720p too. Its to provide overhead.

And I dont count particle effects as next gen. ( Its like the overuse of bloom when we entered gen 7)

Nintendo has their style.
