He was pretty hard on the Wii:

"But I think it’s become clear to most the Wii was a fluke, a fad, and I’m willing to call it a creative failure despite its sales numbers. It only created the illusion Nintendo had executed some grand master plan to win the decade, when really they just sort of stumbled into it."

I disagree with him.  I think the problem is that Nintendo stopped supporting it too soon.  What was their last year of solid support, 2009 or 2010?  They abandoned it for the Wii U, which was rushed and that was a big mistake.  Oh, and the Wii U had very few games at launch anyway.  Since they abandoned the Wii completely, shouldn't the Wii U have had great first party support right away?  It seems like they sat around and collected money for a few years, and now they are paying the price.

They must have seriously underestimated the difficulty of HD development. I can't see why else they have that gap in support as I doubt they just stopped what they were doing. It might also have been the 3DS problems that distracted them.

It's obviously an emotive topic and Nintendo execs are probably discussing the issue right now. I can see the temptation to do it. Right now they are producing great games, but are forced to sell them to a small userbase that Nintendo had to take an initial loss on, selling them the console in the first place. The idea of selling you games on a much, much larger userbase and letting Sony and MS deal with the initial losses of the razorblade model is very tempting. They've got to be looking at the sales of the current market leaders in third party games and remembering with nostalgia when Mario used to pull those numbers, when he actually had a userbase to sell to.

Edited the thread title, as these threads always attract people with the thought that someone of particular prominence is making these arguments (it always seems to happen with Forbes)

Damn, I'm reading through this article, and it's not good. Not good at all. I could easily rip him a new one, but I don't think I'll bother since I don't intend to sign up on the Forbes commenting section... But he's really failing in much of his research and his way of thinking.

EDIT: Oooooh, he's awanna be auther as well. mkey
