Hello everyone,

I'm curious to know the answer to this question and want to know what are people think about games actually. I've seen so many people say i have put tens/hundreds of hours into that game. I don't get it, what the people actually think game media as.

Do they use this for passing their time (or) experience something and feel? because by spending lots of hours on games is not wise and we are losing lot of our daily life due to that which is more importanat than the game. A game should be short and sweet experince, instead of having being addicted fun for lots of hours (it can be addicted but should not be lasting more than 15-20 Hours to complete).

I mostly hate the genre RPG which lets the people to waste lots of hours in upgrading/grinding, and i belive game to be short but have replayablity so they can experience it again and again when they want instead of expecting to spend more time to experience.

Also I beliegve only Linear games can give us great stories otherwise it will be broken. I want developers to create new experiences using the technology instead of using same old IP's often to generate money. I really love Sony because they take risk in creating new IP's, studios and utilize technology for gaming than Microsoft and Nintendo.

What do you think?

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

I like variety

I like short games with good story
I like long games with good story
I can also like games with no story but last hours
I can even like games that lack hours and lack story

I measure how good a game is based on my own enjoyment from play any game

I like open worlds that let you make your own story. The original metroid on nes made me prefer this style. If gameplay is addicting then an implicit story in an open world is as long as you want it to be. I vehemently hate grinding. As per explicit stories. I like 20 hours.

I loved the pace and progression of Resident Evil 4, and it took me around 25 hours. It just felt like a perfect amount of game time, when I felt the story should soon end, it did.

And with Twilight Princess I had fun for 70 hours before beating the final boss. Again I felt there was a perfect pacing, much more than when I played Wind Waker which dragged on for way too long IMO. And that was even shorter too.

Early this year I played Ni no Kuni, and that game dragged on for WAY too long... but the first 70% of the game was awesome. I played for over 90 hours when I finally finished it.

All in all, some games have better pacing and is just better games, so my opinion on this matter varies along with the game, genre etc. Twilight Princess clicked with me right away, while Wind Waker never reached the same heights.

But OT: I never play games to just pass time, but when I have to pass time, I do play games.

Yep.

Depends on the game for me.

I love spending 80+ hours on a Skyrim/Fallout/Mass Effect

I love spending 12 hours on a Bioshock/Wonderful 101

I love spending 1 hour, several times a week on a bit of Mario, Pikmin, Smash Bros etc

There are games you play for a short story, some for an open world epic and some for pick up and play fun. All are good.

Now I'm older, and have more commitments, I'm leaning more towards games that I can play in chunks (as opposed to my student days). But that'll no doubt change when the next Fallout/Elder Scrolls hits.

I disagree that games have to be a short experience, I think those games are great and I love playing games like The Last of Us that are about a 10-15 hour game, but I personally enjoy playing games that have a lot of content for me to explore and enjoy..

I don't understand this notion that if you play a game for 50-100 hours (for example) then you must be addicted to it and playing it constantly... When Skyrim came out I played it for about 1-2 hours each time I played it but I played it for a long amount of time in total over the span of a year or so... I wasn't addicted to the game in the sense that I played it for like 5-10 hours per play session, but it was a game I enjoyed coming back to again just like I enjoy coming back to something like Mario Kart to play an hour or two every so often.

I played The Last of Us earlier in the year and thought it was fantastic but I have not gone back to it since... In the end I got more for my money playing a game like Skyrim or Fallout then I did from The Last of Us even though I think both games are fantastic.

I also disagree that a game HAS to be linear to have a great story.. I played Sleeping Dogs last year which is an open world game, I thought the story in that game was brilliant.. I agree that games that have a linear format tend to have a better story because it's more focused but I don't think great stories are exclusive to linear games at all.

People get different enjoyment out of games... That's what's so great about games :)

Some people prefer short but memorable experiences like Journey
Some people prefer linear games with great stories like The Last of Us
Some people prefer challenging games like Dark Souls
Some people prefer long games like Fallout or other stuff like JRPG's for example.
Some people prefer to play the multi player of a game like Call of Duty or Battlefield all year
Some people prefer games where they get to choose how the story unfolds like Mass Effect
Some people even prefer games that are pretty much never-ending like World of Warcraft

I could go on with this.

I think this is what is so great about video games, there are so many different types of players who enjoy different types of games and I don't think any one type of structure is "right" as long as the player enjoys the experience.

No one is saying someone has to enjoy a 50 hour game or a 10-20 hour game :)

Have you played skyrim? It has both

Imo only multiplayer games work without story.

I like having a mix of both, so I play some games one way, and other games the other way.

I like both if done properly. I enjoy Final Fantasy, but I also enjoy Minecraft which has pretty much no plot.

As others have said, depends on the game.

I might be annoyed if I pay full price for a game that turns out to be short though... For example I don't think Mirror's Edge is worth £35, but I wouldn't have had an issue at the normal budget price of £20 (I got it for £3.50 in a Steam sale though so I definately have no complaints)

I think some games can drag on too long too, but that of course depends on the game.
