I disagree that games have to be a short experience, I think those games are great and I love playing games like The Last of Us that are about a 10-15 hour game, but I personally enjoy playing games that have a lot of content for me to explore and enjoy..

I don't understand this notion that if you play a game for 50-100 hours (for example) then you must be addicted to it and playing it constantly... When Skyrim came out I played it for about 1-2 hours each time I played it but I played it for a long amount of time in total over the span of a year or so... I wasn't addicted to the game in the sense that I played it for like 5-10 hours per play session, but it was a game I enjoyed coming back to again just like I enjoy coming back to something like Mario Kart to play an hour or two every so often.

I played The Last of Us earlier in the year and thought it was fantastic but I have not gone back to it since... In the end I got more for my money playing a game like Skyrim or Fallout then I did from The Last of Us even though I think both games are fantastic.

I also disagree that a game HAS to be linear to have a great story.. I played Sleeping Dogs last year which is an open world game, I thought the story in that game was brilliant.. I agree that games that have a linear format tend to have a better story because it's more focused but I don't think great stories are exclusive to linear games at all.

People get different enjoyment out of games... That's what's so great about games :)

Some people prefer short but memorable experiences like Journey
Some people prefer linear games with great stories like The Last of Us
Some people prefer challenging games like Dark Souls
Some people prefer long games like Fallout or other stuff like JRPG's for example.
Some people prefer to play the multi player of a game like Call of Duty or Battlefield all year
Some people prefer games where they get to choose how the story unfolds like Mass Effect
Some people even prefer games that are pretty much never-ending like World of Warcraft

I could go on with this.

I think this is what is so great about video games, there are so many different types of players who enjoy different types of games and I don't think any one type of structure is "right" as long as the player enjoys the experience.

No one is saying someone has to enjoy a 50 hour game or a 10-20 hour game :)
