Speaking of Paper Mario 64, I need to go back and play that! Would love it if they put it the Wii U VC, and 3DS (for you!). You have an impressive list, surprised I didn't see any mention of Kingdom Hearts.

Well I am getting Paper Mario Sticker Star (although people say its bad) - I ordered it for $10 lol - cant complain.

Also thanks! I just got my copies of Kingdom Hearts 3D and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD yesterday :P. Been playing Ni No Kuni all day today - already clocked 50+ hours on it. Near the end and once I am done with that, I will begin Re:Coded because I want to play it before 3D - plus I am dying to play Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix - already played Kingdom Hearts 1 , 2 and Re:Com like 4 times on my PS2. Now I will get to enjoy KH1 and Re:COM in glorious HD and with trophy support *-*!

Cant wait for KH 2.5 HD to come over!

Good for you, lol! I'm actually one of the one, who actually really liked it. Go into it not expecting "Paper Mario". It's not really an RPG anymore, treat it more like an adventure game and for $10... even if you hate it, not the end of the world lol.

As for Kingdom Hearts... I've never actually played the first one, don't kill me! I've never seen the appeal of Disney in an RPG (that's just me), I should at least give it a chance I suppose, but idk. I played KH: DDD on the 3DS, but I never got into it, put in over 5 hours (probably because I never understood the story as a result of never playing the others...) Yeah, I really should try the first KH's game... It's weird, Iplay all these lesser known JRPGs, but skip one of the biggest ones.

I haven't played many and I have yet to beat many as well.

I've played FFXIII-2, Xenoblade, and Kingdom Hearts 1.5. I actually just bought Ni no Kuni today and its currently downloading (and it is taking for-fucking-ever) I plan to get Tales of Xillia soon and probably the sequel too but we'll see.

I know JRPGs are pretty much stuck in the past but i just like them. The whole adventure, new sights, big bosses kinda deal.

"Trick shot? The trick is NOT to get shot." - Lucian

I've played alot of them this year.

I played every Fire Emblem game and Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 3 (have yet to get 2), if these count.
I played Persona 4 Golden, SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked and 2, The World Ends With You (still not finished with that), lots of Pokémon games (X/Y, Mystery Dungeon 3, and I went back to Ruby/Sapphire), I aquired and played Final Fantasy 3 and 4 (both of which I didn't finish yet), Ni No Kuni, Lufia II for the SNES, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower, EarthBound, Mother 1 and Mother 3 (got those two for my birthday), and to round it off some on the PSP (which I got this summer) like Star Oceans 1 and 2 and Tales Of The World: Radiant Mythology, and most importantly Mario & Luigi Dream Team and SuperStar Saga, which I go back to regularly. I also yearly play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

If I count all the JRPGs I played this year, my favourite would be Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, since it's my favourite game of all time. If I had to limit myself to those that I played for the first time this year, it would probably be Fire Emblem Awakening, and if we're talking about more traditional JRPGs (non-strategy ones), I'd go for Persona 4 Golden, which was also the biggest surprise for me this year.

Why do I like JRPGs... pretty good question actually. I don't really know. As probably became apparent, I play almost nothing else, but I'm not even sure why. Probably the combination of story, gameplay and characters. It's also pretty important that the game isn't too dark. I don't really like that. It's also the reason why I held off of buying Persona 3 or most of the SMT games in general, since I'm told that they are pretty dark. I just don't like that as much (see Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door being my favourite game).

I don't think that there's much to be improved upon. I like my classic JRPGs and wouldn't have them any other way. I know that changing nothing would damage the genre, but I can't really suggest anything as I'm quite content with what there is. This also explains the amount of old games in the list of games I've played this year. Only recently I quired an SNES (AND a Super Famicom actually) and a Famicom, looked into the GBA again and got a PSP. I also got 6 original PAL PlayStations with my SNES, 2 of which seem to not have region locking (chipmodded?), so there'll be plenty of JRPGs I have yet to uncover. Also planning on getting an american PS2 in the future (damn you regionlocking). I'm all set, even if the genre would vanish completely. :P

1) Persona 4 Golden, Tales of Xillia and Pokemon Y. Persona 4 Golden is by far my favourite. Tales of Xillia was great, but not as good as Vesperia in my opinion. Pokemon Y has been great so far, but I sadly haven't had much time to play it.

2) Mainly for the worlds, art style, soundtracks and characters. Addictive battle and leveling systems help.

3) More grounded and less convoluted stories. I'm pretty sick of saving the world by killing a God. Some scenes in JRPGs can also make me cringe, there's a reason I prefer playing them on handhelds. I wish they would get rid of these.

I'll give Paper Mario SS a try - I mean it cant be as bad as Mario is Missing or Mario's Time Machine - two games I played from start to finish lol.

Sticker Star isn't bad per se, it's just not much of a JRPG, even less so than Super Paper Mario. It also can be a chore to play in some parts, especially if you've used a wrong sticker at one point. Too much backtracking and all.

You don't have a level up system, and fights gain you nothing but money and stickers. So most of the time, they feel pointless to me, and again, I'd rather classify the game as a puzzle adventure than an RPG.

You should give it a chance, I dont know how 3D is like except for the part where I turned it on and saw the Ursula tutorial.

Anyways, KH1 is heavily recommended. At first I thought the idea of having Disney characters in a RPG story with FF characters was stupid, but trust me - the end result is amazing and worth it!

Yeah, next time I go to GameStop I'll pick it up. I should at least try it. they actually had it on Amazon for like 14.99 for Black Friday... missed that deal.

After you play it, or have enough time with it to formulate an opinion, come back and share your thoughts with us (Paper Mario SS), I'd like to hear it (read it).

I have only played demos, I don't know if I've played any new JRPGS in 2013. Most of them I like a lot because of the story, that is definitely a big part. I also like that it has a lot of content, so you don't feel ripped off. I'm not sure what I would want them to improve.

I'm also currently playing Tales of Xillia. Not gung ho crazy about it so far (never been a big fan of the Tales battle system), but it's pretty enjoyable. Other than that I play a pretty broad spectrum of games but in terms of JRPGs I've played Ni No Kuni, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix (also very excited for 2.5 to come out), and Pokemon Diamond this year.

I typically play for the art style, leveling and equipment systems, tons of additional gameplay/weapons/enemies outside of the main stories.

Bit of a graphics snob over here so I can't wait to see some animated/cel-shaded games on the next (current?) gen systems. The technology's come a long way but I think it leaves a lot to be desired still. Also wish a few more blockbuster traditional turn-based games would be developed, and not just remastered (ie. FFX, DQVIII).

It's all about the game.
