Nintendo games also tend to be beautifully harmonized with their hardware, a kind of harmony that only really comes from exclusivity. If they had to develop cross platform this would be lost.

I don't know about this as it's hard to judge one way or another.

Going third party doesn't mean you have to develop cross platform and as I menioned in my OP I've never seen any evidence that EAD has much input into the console design.

They may not have hardware input, but they still fit their games to the hardware wonderfully.

Then they'd have no problem doing this on any piece of hardware. From what we've heard Sony engages third party devs extensively throughout the console's design.

If they had to cross-develop between PS5 and Xbox Two that might be a problem though.

Well then I'd have to buy Sony consoles, which tend to cost more.

For instance, if I had instead bought a Vita when I bought my 3DS, I would have spent $80 more on hardware -- that's two full retail games. I haven't bought a Wii U yet, but of course at the moment the PS4 costs $100 more than the Wii U.

Hell, I bet I spent less than $600 on my launch Wii and all of the Wii games I own together.

But you'd be getting your money's worth with power and 3rd party support.

How much of that extra 3rd-party support could I afford after paying hundreds of dollars more for the console?

Let me tell you what 3DS retail games I own right now: Kid Icarus Uprising, Pokemon Y, Zelda Link Between Worlds, Monster Hunter 3G, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. The Vita cost $80 more than the 3DS when I bought mine, the cost of two 3DS games. Guess which two of the aforementioned games I would axe from my collection, if I had to make such a choice before even buying them?

Vita doesn't even have 3rd party support. Obviously the 3DS is better :p. I was talking about the PS4 for example.

Lol Purple your op is so bad lol. You mention 3D World being outsold by Knack like that wasn't only in the UK lol. Might I also add that as long as Micro and Sony fail to beat Nintys handhelds...they will never go 3rd party.

I know it was a bit of a stretch, but Mario being outsold by Knack on a platform that's been out a year longer in Europe's largest market is definitely a concern. I was using it just to show the market for that type of game is there on Sony consoles and if Knack (average at best) can sell so well, Nintendo are missing a trick limiting themselves to the Wii U.

The 3DS's relative success does make things more complicated. Especially considering Sony requires Vita remote play for all PS4 games so that would never happen.. but the 3DS at its peak hasn't been able to cover the costs of the Wii U over the last year so something will need to change.

Purple, sorry to tell you this but the U.K. is not the largest market in Europe. Germany has 20 million more people in it. Do you honestly think Knack will sell even close to this new Mario game?

Well I'm using vgchartz numbers and the U.K is a considerably larger gaming market than Germany.

No, I don't think Knack will outsell Mario in the long run. Did you read why I brought it up though?

lol ^^

Those two games are better than, at least 70 % of current japanese Vita library.

I'm sure they are, I just thought it was pretty easy and obvious to pick out the 2 games that wouldn't have been bought if dengle bought a Vita instead of a 3DS

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I haven't even bought a Wii U yet. Regardless, third-party support for the console will mean little to me. $60 is a tougher sell than $30-40. I expect to buy fewer than a half-dozen Wii U games at full price during its lifetime, most or all of them first-party. If I had to pay $100 more for the console, I would take longer to buy it and buy fewer games in the long run. Not good for me, not good for Nintendo, not good for the industry.

Well, that's ONLY true for the PS4. That never happened with PS1, 2 or 3, so the trend speaks against your point. And remember that PS3 was very hard to develop for. Do you honestly think Nintendo would have made as great games on the PS3 as they did on GC, Wii or Wii U? No, they probably wouldn't. And seriously, take a look at PS1, 2, 3 and 4. How much have changed? Really, how much have changed between each instalment? Not much. Now, look at N64, GC, Wii and Wii U. Talk about change! Say what you will, but Nintendo drives innovation in a way few other companies does. THAT'S what would be lost if they went 3rd party.

Because there is no need for it. I can buy the Nintendo games I want on the 3DS and the Wii U, there is no need for the current model to change.

The reason Nintendo games are usually the best of the best is because they are created with the hardware in mind. Using Nintendo's unique interfaces and game interaction is what makes them special.
I dont want to pretend to hold a wheel to play the next mario kart infront of the kinect
I dont want skype calls and achievements in my games
and i certainly dont want to have to use the Move instead of the Wii-mote.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

I think the biggeest reason is nostalgia. For a lot of us, Nintendo means videogames and consoles.

Nintendo were the ones that made videogames a worldwide entertainment. How many japanese games were launched outside of Japan before the NES? And how many american games arrived here to Europe? The NES allowed that to happen. Also, while Nintendo wasn't the first to launch a console, they certainly are the ones that have been doing so for longer. SEGA is a shadow of what they were, SNK is gone and Atari is dead (or almost). We only have Nintendo from those times, and losing their consoles would mean the definitive end of an era.

Also, as some have already said, their philosophy when designing consoles and controllers is more open than the one the competitors have shown, and don't fear to try new things. Although after what happened with the wiimote it's clear that both Sony and MSoft have upped their game, one keeping Kinect and adding rumble triggers while the other one has chosed to add a touch pad to its controller.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Other hardware manufacturers may lack features necessary to Nintendo fullfil its vision, sometimes.

Zelda Ocarina wouldn't be achievable on a PSone for example. Not without some compromises.

Wii sports wouldn't be possible on ps3.

Brain trainning wouldn't be possible on psp.

And so on.

Because Nintendo make consoles with more interesting interfaces and lower price points than their competitors.

just imagine how revolutionary and amazing Wii Sports would have been with this

In 50 years from now, people won't know whether those are alternative PSone controllers from 1996 or not.

I hate how the industry is stuck in "winning formula" when it comes to input interfaces, and mainly Nintendo is innovating while others copy.
