Forums - Sony Discussion - In-game XMB coming at GDC!?!?!?

On the official PlayStation.com website, there was a video and some captions talking about what to expect, and what you can do on the PlayStation Network. The site says that you will be able to "talk to others during gameplay, say hello anytime you're online or have a video chat with an Eye camera, USB camera or headset."

Most of that is old, but the talking during gameplay may be the hint of In-Game XMB coming, or maybe even the elusive HOME beta.  And what better time would be to announce this than at GDC.  What do you guys think?

PlayStation.com Shows, Then Pulls New Network Features

PlayStation.com saw an update to its PlayStation 3 section earlier today, a fact pointed out by an eagle-eyed reader who noticed that new information on Home had finally arrived on the official US site. While we watched the preview video, hoping for new information or a more solid release date, there appeared to be nothing substantially new. The embedded video showed off the game's theater sections, mini-games, chat features and 3D trophy capabilities, but not too much else.

Curiously, though, someone at PlayStation.com decided that whatever was being touted on the new PlayStation Network pages was something that wasn't quite ready for prime time. Perhaps it was the other PSN features, one that hints at new functionality coming soon.

While most of that's standard stuff—excluding mention of Home, something the current PlayStation Network web site doesn't do—one piece of new info surprised us. On the new PlayStation Network pages, Sony promises that you'll be able to "talk to others during gameplay, say hello anytime you're online or have a video chat with an Eye camera, USB camera or headset." Yes, most of those options are currently in there, with the exception of the during gameplay part.

It's pretty clear that Sony has heard PlayStation 3 owner demands for in-game access to the Cross Media Bar (XMB)—they say "some of the XMB features" may become accessible during gameplay—but does this signal that it's coming soon? With GDC going down next week, we wouldn't be surprised to hear an announcement about these new features within days.

Thanks to Joel for the heads up.

I hope its coming! I've been waiting for a long time. That and the possible fix for Lair controls...

Here's to hoping it's true.

I also wish Sony would release an official Sony headset with the launch of Home. That would really make online gaming on the PS3 more interesting if everyone could communicate.

YESSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Haha Both home and in gamexmb to be announced at GDC? Looks like it

Maybe Home Open Beta, but atleast I think they will announce ingame XMB with a patch next week.

Would be nice.

The only reason I think they haven't implemented it yet is because of RAM space(maybe?) So possibly they decreased the required ram to run the OS in game, therefore allowing for them to add in game XMB without further limiting developers?

This would be so awesome, considering PS3 users on playstation.com have been crying over about a year for this feature.

I want it for sure!

I 2nd that. They should use the one that comes with warhawk, it works really well and you can actually turn it off and back on without any issues (Not like the motorola one I have.)

But I wish they could at something that allows you to hook it up to the PS3 controller so when the batter dies you can still use it. I hate having my BT headset die, then having to wait 2 hours to be able to talk trash in COD4 again.

Off Topic:

My K/D ratio 1.7

Id SOOOOOOO kick your ass in COD

Finally!!!!!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Whats really funny, is now the page redirects you to some Home video from GDC.
If thats not a hint, I dont know what is....

And I think the page is like your "PSN" page, so you can log in and access your home and messaging, etc.

Look, some people might say "omg i just wanna play games." but this stuff is pretty amazing. I hope people dont get to hyped though, and get disappointed again. Yet if Sony FINALLY delivers, I think you'd be a fool to not eventually buy a PS3

Thats about the 100th thread on this topic, and I've been disappointed 99 times. I won't get excited about any more until theres an official announcement from Sony. No more "anonymous" sources.

Sweet, well I can't wait for the 101st thread!

They need to roll it out already.
