Forums - Nintendo - Do Games Really Sell Consoles?

If that's true shouldn't the Wii U be flying off store shelves?  I mean it has all of the top 4 rated next gen games and I know this is subective but its 2014 announced games completely blows away the PS4s and X1s.  Also Nintendo tends to have 1 or 2 games it announces mid year and releases for holiday season so its safe to say they still have some tricks up their sleeves.  On top of that its $100 and $200 cheaper.  Seeing how well received its games are getting its showing that power does not equal good games, not to mention games like Knack and Ryse have shown that.  So what's going on?

this is why i think: There should be a rise on sales in at least one of the big 3 regions in order for one console with good games to change its fate. 3DS did it on Japan, but the reason why it changed more easily is because in Japan people have a real social life that help good words to be spread.

On the other hand, Wii U best region is northamerica, but this region lack that social interaction. It will be hard for Wii U to reach the level of success of 3DS even with really good games. Once the console is rocking hard in a good way on one of those regions, other will start wondering why. That is when everything suddenly changes.

in other words, after one complete year with those kind of sales, Wii U needs a region like Japan in order to increase drastically their sales. But we all know that is portables territory, specially 3DS territory becaue of good games alone.

Games do, I would say most of the time one game does not.

This guy gets it.

Games sell consoles, but it's not the only factor. There are lots of other factors, but games are the main driving force to selling a system. The Wii U, right now, has its strongest point in games but is weaker on pretty much all other points except price in comparison to the other consoles.

Look at it this way: if games don't sell consoles then what does?

Ask PS2 that question about GTAIII, which was originally exclusive.

Or NES about Super Mario Bros.

Or Genesis about Sonic the Hedgehog.

Or the Xbox about Halo.

Yes. Great software sells systems. Pointless question.

so much pessimism for wii u in these forums. It is quite depressing :(

Nevertheless, I shall remain optimisitic that nintendo can pull a turnaround for the Wii U

No, Gamestop, Amazon etc. sell consoles =P

Just like Iwata said before, WiiU is a unique system. if someone said they buy Nintendo system for Mario Zelda Metroid, lets flip the question like this. Would they buy PS4 if there is Mario Zelda Metroid games? most of them will say YES! and then ask them if there is COD BF4 Uncharted Tomb Raider MGS etc2 in Nintendo System would they buy it? u guys already know the answer.

I bought the original Xbox just to play Shenmue 2.Thanks to that I found Halo.

I specifically bought my Xbox 360s to play Halo. I had to buy 3 boxes in all due to rriods. I plan on buying the xbone when the next Halo launches.

The other games that I would buy a console specifically for, had they been exclusive, would be Destiny, Kingdom Hearts 3, FFXV, and MGSV. Any one of these games would be enough reason for me to purchase a console.

Games do sell systems yes, but gamers tend to wait for a few games they want to play to actually come out first before buying the console (hence PS3's initial struggle to then selling well over time)

Wii is just a different scenario because many of those who purchased were casual gamers who don't buy the serious stuff (which was smart business for Nintendo) but casuals are unpredictable and are just looking for new things to play with (cell phones, ipads, etc.)

Wii U will be very successful in my opinion because once big name games come out (Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, etc etc) people will be forced to buy Wii U especially when the price gets cut to a level of competitiveness that the competition can't do. So, itll take some time, but killer apps, (as history has shown, even with the 3DS) will come out and sell the system.

A lot of us here are sure that Nintendo still has cards up their sleeve. E3 and other Nintendo Directs etc will show us just what Nintendo has planned. So we have to relax and have faith.
