The screen is just like a regular DS, there aren't any enhancements. There are annoying black side bars on the XL because the 3DS XL screen is bigger than the regular DSi LL screen, and it won't stretch to fit.

I guess DS games are quite pixelated on the 3DS Xl then? 

It depends on the game actually. The DSi XL actually did a great job at bringing up the size of the screen without having a large pixelization effect, but games like KH 358/2 Days suffered a lot.
