Last gen they overcame a year head start by the 360, a horrible 1st 18 months, and high cost (with little added value) to pass the 360. This gen. Same launch month. Cheaper console. Great start. No anomalies like the Wii to contend with (and leech casual sales and control of japan).  I mean I see no reason a person could go wrong with a XB1 purchase, but I see few reason why someone would purchase an XB1 over a PS4 (obviously the main thing is if you want to play one of their exclusives would be the main thing) Last gen the 360 got most of the mainstream gamers in NA and UK, Sony about everywhere else. I think due to the price and hype the PS4 come close to splitting these markets. I also see the PS4 dominiating Japan which last gen the Wii hurt it there alot.  I see WW the XB1 seeing slightly decreased console sales and in a twist it having a lower attach rate (seen a more of an all in one, who would buy a PS4 except to play games). I just think things could snowball a bit for Sony and being able to get a 55 to 60% market shart with the XB1 getting 30-35% and Wii U maybe 10 to 15%. That is WW. In NA and UK maybe like 40 to 45 for MS 35 to 40 for PS4 and Wii U gets the scraps.  All in all this gen I see total Console sales way down, but the PS4+XB1 will be = or > than PS3+360, of course the different is the Wii U gets 20 to 30 mil compared to over 100 mil the Wii got.

Err, actually 360 has outsold PS3 worldwide (just google for their recent respective 80 million sold announcements, Sony's was 3 weeks after Microsoft's)

Also, your points are valid, but do note the PS3 had an uncontested market all to itself in Japan to skew the worldwide sales (which wont change with PS4, but still makes the PS3 accomplishment of almost catching 360 come with a caveat, meaning 360 outsold PS3 to a greater degree everywhere outside Japan).

MS has made it difficult for themselves but it's a long generation. a simple price cut to 399 for Xbox One at any time for example would change a lot of things. They'll also have the big guns of Halo and Gears waiting in the wings. Sony has big guns of Uncharted and god of bore waiting, but imo those franchises are not as big to the mainstream (despite their popularity on forums)

MS's 80M was obviously rounded up, given they only reached 79.4M two weeks earlier.  We have no idea if Sony rounded up or not.  So, it's just best to assume they are tied, or maybe Sony slightly ahead, until new figures are released.

@ OP

I just can't see Sony losing.  The worst case scenerio I saw was Sony tying or being just behind the One in the US and UK, but EU (and Japan) are going to go Sony in a big way, especially without the One having a cheaper price AND a 1 1/2 year head start like the 360 did.  Now, with the 1M in 24 hr Sony reported and Amazon saying they expect Sony to break records in the UK, I think Sony will have at least a slight lead on the One in the US and UK.  I think we are seeing the PS2's second coming.

It's hilarious how some xbox fans call the xbox one a console for a wider audience.. they act like the ps4 is the n64, where all you do is pop in a cartridge and play, with online features....

the ps4 is capable of doing the same exact multimedia functions if not more than the xbox one, seeing as it has better ram... and the ps4 doesn't just play games as of today either

Exactly, I see no reason why the PS4 can't do all the multimedia functionality of the Xbone. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has realized that tv features aren't exactly a massive selling point.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

If xboxone get a price cut be sure Sony will responds

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Ps4 will not dominate Japan. It will be lucky to outsell vita which it will not. Vita will and is getting more third party support that is japanese and still is flopping. The market is ok with ps3 and 3ds really. No console has a chance.

If Xbox one somehow becomes more then a videogame system.

If it becomes.... a hero.

Er. Living room navigation device popular with the mass market.

...pretty much it though.

Exactly, I see no reason why the PS4 can't do all the multimedia functionality of the Xbone. Unlike Microsoft, Sony has realized that tv features aren't exactly a massive selling point.

Sony can add any of that functionality; it's really more of a matter of "if."

For many of the video and audio formats/codecs, it's a simple matter of licensing fees rather than anything in the hardware itself. Recall the Nintendo Wii leaving out basic DVD playback; done in the interest of costs to cut DVD format licensing fees.

I don't know if people are forgetting that the PS3 was a fantastic media player that covered most major formats (barring MS and Apple proprietary formats) and allowed any external USB HDD to simply plug in with free access to the content turning the PS3 into a media jukebox and yet it is not much of a stretch to say that the percentage of consumers who bought a PS3 as a media hub was in the minority. Yes, there were those who bought them as BD players back when BD players were $1,000, but that was hardly the case even 2-3 years later.

So no; media features were not a huge selling point for the PS3 and it remains to be seen whether consumers really want to buy a $500 box they can plug their existing cable service into.

Personally, I don't see TV as the killer app for the XB1, but I've been wrong before.

It will dominate home console wise.  Given that it will launch at a lower price than the PS3, the Wii U isn't doing so hot there (I see it ending ~4M-5M), and I definitely see the Xbox One performing worse there than the 360 (probably end up ~1M), I think its safe to assume the PS4 should at least best PS3's 10M-11M.  So, probably 12M-14M.

I don't think anything is certain this gen. MS are chasing a much wider audience than Sony is, if that works then even if Sony wins the gamers mindshare then MS may win the console gen. It is impossible to really tell at this point in time.

What does MS offer the wider audience that would get them to shell $500?

Most game consoles aren't moved at launch price. To coin a term... its a jog, not sprint.

MS has had more success at appealing to casuals thanks to the Kinect. Sony has chased after that same audience as well with little success.
