Forums - Gaming - Is this a bad time for Valve to launch Steam Machines?

Day 1. Im really excited for it even though I was counting the days for PS4 launch since february!
The concept appeals to me because I can finally have a decent emulator box under my tv that runs just about everything. You cant even play N64 on PS3 cfw, really terrible. I could play them on my pc... but I want to play console games on the couch like they're meant to be played.

Its also gonna be used as a htpc. The best thing about it all is that Steam Machines will have a console like UI, you dont need a mouse and keyboard input for anything.

For me Steam Machines cant come soon enough!

People expecting SteamMachines to compete with the big 3 consoles are going to be sorely disappointed. This is not going to be moving millions of units.

Exactly, it was never meant to compete with the other home consoles. I do think that one could sneak its way into at least two homes though; yours and mine!

I'm not planning on getting one, there is no reason for someone like me to get one. I feel no desire to stream my PC games to a TV and I don't need a turnkey box. If SteamOS ends up showing actual performance improvements I might dual boot it, but I have my doubts about that as well.

It may not sell as much as the Ps4 or Xbone will, however it will be far from a failure.

Ps3 cfw? Playing N64 on Ps3? WTF?

Steam console is more for pc gamers not console gamers I think it will sell well.
I might get a steam box that's a huge might

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

Steam machines will appeal to gamers who are looking for PC gaming but have no experience with building a good rig or just unfamiliar with the platform itself. Steam Machines will IMO, eat into markets held by the likes of alienware. The selling point is, its a PC optimised for gaming :)

Intel core i7 930 OC @ 4.0 ghz

XFX Double dissipation Radeon HD 7950 356 bit 3gb GDDR5 OC @ 1150 MHz core + 1575 x 4 memory

Triple channel DDR 3 12gb RAM 1600 MHz

Let's consider the following possibility. A large portion of PC gamers make the jump to Steam Machines, due to curiosity, desire for a ready-set machine, or bringing the PC to the living room. This could result in developpers creating games with Steam Machine's specs in mind. That, in turn, can mean building a monster rig is an action to no avail. Your extra specs will not be put in use in many games, thus pushing you to adopt the Steam Machine spec profile.

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

1. There is no SteamMachines spec profile, there is a range topping out at a fucking Titan. Various manufacturers will be making SteamMachines for multiple different price points and featuresets. Stoping thinking about them as if they are going to be like consoles, they aren't they are PCs in a livingroom freindly box with a gimped version of Linux that is optimised for gaming with a Steam big picture interface.

2. That already happens with Consoles and PC games still scale, there is no reason to not allow games to scale on high end hardware even if it's only resolution and framerate.

3. SteamOS is going to be extreamly limited in functionality being designed and limited to only installing stuff through Steam from the sounds of things. As I have other uses outside of gaming for my PC and I don't need two devices it's far better for me to invest in one device than two to do the same job. Unless Valve are going to be subsidising the hardware (they wont), in that case maybe I might get one (and install Windows) but then i would have to make a home server to hold all my HDDs lol.

People really have to realise that Valve are not making a traditional console like the big 3, it's not going to be that and people need to stop thinking of them in those terms. SteamMachines are PCs in a living room freindly box (that come with SteamOS preinstalled and possibly with that controller), nothing more nothing less.
