Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 13th November Broadcasts

Posted Thu 14th Nov 2013 11:00 by Thomas Whitehead

Big news for 3DS and a whole load of release dates and details

So, another Nintendo Direct broadcast has come and gone. The reaction online seemed to be, as is now standard, rather mixed. Some have expressed disappointment, while others (such as this writer) thought the broadcasts did a rather good job. Primarily announced as providing details on 3DS titles into early 2014, it nevertheless served up the major announcements that Miiverse is coming to the 3DS in December, along with Nintendo Network ID support that'll also allow users to share their eShop funds across the Wii U and portable store; it has some quirks and limitations, which we'll be outlining in an article soon.

As always, with so much happening this is your go-to source for quick links to all of the broadcast related stories. Due to the madness of covering as much as possible two things slipped past us that, as yet, we haven't reported in their own articles. These are that Inazuma Eleven 3: Team Ogre Attacks! will come to the 3DS in Europe on 14th February, and the fact that the new Kirby title on 3DS will be called Kirby: Triple Deluxe — as the latter had no other details, it would have struggled to fill a whole article, in any case.

With those aside, we were busy bees writing up all the details; all are linked below, while you can view both broadcasts in full at the end of this article.

What were your high points of the direct?

Around the Network

Done. For anybody that wants it

there you go Basil :p

The whole thing was kind of boring. I mean, Zelda looks nice, and Mario 3D World looks better every time. Bravely Default and Mario Party 3DS looked cool as well. Aside from that, meh.

If it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't have even known there was a Nintendo Direct. I don't think these things are all that useful.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

When a Nintendo Direct arrives, than I usually just watch the new trailers and not the Nintendo Direct itself. So thanks for the summarization.

Around the Network

Pretty much just a series of minor updates on stuff we already knew about. I suppose we'll have to wait all the way until after the holiday season before we hear any actual news.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

i quite like the directs, good way to communicate from nintendo,i only saw the europe one though

ONE NEGATIVE:

The new impending Nintendo 3DS update that was revealed last night has a bit of a down side to it.

Sure the new update will bring Miiverse, but also it’ll bring shared eShop balances to both the Wii U and 3DS through the Nintendo Network ID system. That means if you spend or add money to any Wii U or 3DS linked with the same NNID the balance will be shared across.

Nintendo has shared a Q&A about the new update and it’s got some really worrying news in it, especially for us in Australia.

When the new update hits and if you link a Nintendo Network ID (which will be required for demos and free applications) you will no longer be able to change your systems region and use the eShop in another currency.

After registering a Nintendo Network ID, you will be unable to change regions and use multiple currencies – for instance, pounds and euros – in Nintendo eShop. The funds in the currency that corresponds to the country setting of your Nintendo Network ID will remain, and any funds in other currencies will be deleted and no longer usable. Please make sure to use up any other currencies before registering a Nintendo Network ID to your Nintendo 3DS system.
That means my fellow Australians, no more European store for us and vice versa. That means if a game comes out on the European store and not Australia we will no longer be able to buy it. All those indie games that get classified and never make it here? Impossible to get. Never mind the price difference that European store affords, nor the early access to some games. All gone.

There’s also repercussions here for us in the press. Every review code we get from a publisher who isn’t Nintendo Australia is a code for the European eShop – on both Wii U and 3DS. This now means no early reviews from Vooks, something we’ve already been struggling with this year.

So what’s the solution? Don’t update? Don’t register a Nintendo Network ID? Possibly both of those. We will keep an eye on this for over the coming weeks as we know a fair amount of you like to purchase from European store, we’d also like to keep reviewing games too.

Nintendo, please don’t kill our site.
