Nintendo was in a stronger position moving into this generation than with the GameCube

Wii sold 3 million hardware in total in 2011. This maybe more than what the GameCube sold 2005, but can we really brag about this momentum?

edit: Wow, Wii sold around 12 million in 2011. But it sold near 5-6 million in 2012 when Wii U launched in the middle November. The momentum is definitely down but the Wii U sales are not increasing in response, though.

Nintendo's lack of support to keep Wii relevant in its closing years have negatively impacted the Wii brand. Whatever is selling the Wii U this holiday and beyond isn't the Wii or Nintendo brand name.

edit: I agree that Wii U won't sell only 20 million max only because I think its early to say anything about a system's future based on its first year if developers are still making games for it in the future.

While that is true, Nintendo still has broader demographic appeal than they did headed into the 6th generation.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

20m. That's pretty generous of him. The GC was what? 22m? That's probably the most positive thing he has said about the wii u.

mans got a point, why are the nintendo fans not buying it?
likewise why are sony fans (or at the very least those with PS+) not getting the vita?

maybe people dont want consoles without support, regardless of the brand?

I think they have, and that's for the Vita and Wii U.  The problem is that neither system is getting the mainstream acceptance that the Wii and Playstation have received.  Heck, a good chunk of the public isn't even aware that the Wii U is a new system.  That's Nintendo's fault, of course, but I can't blame "Nintendo fans" however you define that group.  Pach is blaming them because he wants to troll them.

you really think 4m wii U's and 6m vita's are enough in the time they have been on the market?

games are budgeted based on sales forecasts and those forecasts will never be impressive when the install base is so small.

I know its logical to think "launch the big games and watch the hardware sales go up", but sadly thats not how its done.

most third party developers will continue to be reluctant unless its a cheap port they are making, or the systems hit 10m and people start buying games. i cant argue against this because personally i havent bought a single vita game. PS+ all the way.

I'm not saying either system has sold good numbers, just that by saying "Nintendo fans" I'm assuming he's talking about the hardcore fans, like those who actually know who he is and likely already own the system.  The casuals, on the other hand, certainly haven't shown up.  He seems to be trolling Nintendo fans for fun.

Well given current trends, and if X1 and PS4 cannibalize any momentum WiiU can get....then sure itll be the next Gamecube

Meh.....3DS is where its at anyways :)

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

There does not seem to be anything compelling many people to by a Wii U NOW or even in the next few months other than Christmas shopping season- Even for people who want to get the Wi U for Smash Bros, Mario, Mario Kart etc. they can just wait- some of these games are coming out on the 3DS which will give people an excuse to wait even longer or possibly a reason not to buy it at all-

The Wii U needs some mystery or excitement like a 3d Metroid game or maybe a trailer for a Zelda game that really looks different and unpredictable- most people that do not have a Wii u but may get one in the future just don t think they are missing anything by waiting- if some of the games they are waiting on turn out to be not as good as they hoped they may pass altogether

I think just as much if not more so- The wii U is going to have a hard time moving much software even if sales rise due to it being a 2ndary console for so many current and future owners

Yeah he isn't bashing Ninty at all. 20 mill is pretty much exactly what it will get if not less...

It will sell exactly 30 mil or a little less. This is what you get for not talking to third parties. Pachter was being a dick. Nintendo has a sale from me no matter what. I am feeling the void of skipping the Wii gen.

Too many on defense of the system, too litlle actually onwing one. I have to agree. GO BUY THE DAMM SYSTEM!

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."
