Nicely done!

I've been mulling over playing The Witcher/The Witcher 2. Looking for a WRPG that does the following:

  • Exploration as a big aspect
  • Player choices affects the world around them
  • Solitary adventuring (I like working alone :P)
  • Customization in who you are and how you play
  • Fantasty setting

Any recommendations? (I've already put 364 hours into Skyrim, so that's out )

#42: Super Punch Out! (SNES)

The sequel to a great NES game, Super Punch Out!! brings back old favorites and adds a good deal of new boxers. Super Punch Out!! continues with its unconventional brand of boxing where fighters are allowed to use kicks, sticks, juggling balls, their hair or their spit to defeat you. While not as challenging as the original, the game is no cake-walk on your first play-through but once you get a hang of things the time attack mode gives this game great replayability as you figure out the fastest way to knock out your opponent (it's possible to beat Rick Bruiser in under 30 seconds if you know what you're doing).

42. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
DS (2007)
Game Freak

When it comes to the weakest entry in the Pokemon series, fans are usually torn between Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. They can both be accused of having the poorest designed Pokemon, an over-abundance of legendary Pokemon, and an overworld mired by odd design choices (Abundance of water ways in Ruby/Sapphire and Mount Coronet in Diamond/Pearl). I believe that Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is the weakest Pokemon game (and it still is a great game, don't get me wrong), and that Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum makes up for its shortcomings with improved battle elements (Physical/Special attacks are no longer determined by type), fantastic new evolved forms of old Pokemon (Weavile and Leafeon are some of my favorite Pokemon ever) and online capabilities, which made trading and battling friends a breeze and a blast (it even had voice chat!). Despite its criticisms, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum expanded the series in ways not yet realized in previous games, and there was no going back after that.

Hint for #41:

Sumo Wrestling gets a face-lift.

My 41 is the side scrolling brawler that is widely regarded as having far and away the best soundtrack ever in the genre.

Hint for number 42.

Dragon kicking asses into space.  I know you like the ball buster.

I'd put direct quotes, but then you could use Google for the answer.  I made sure myself you couldn't use Google for help, but if you know the answer it'll be as plain as day.  I'll add the direct quotes when someone answers the  game or tomorrow.

Finally, a Boss Fight!

God Hand.

Yeah.  Awesome game.  Fixing the quotes since someone guessed it.  "Dragon kick your ass into the milky way.  Don't act like you don't like the ball buster."  The ending song is awesome until about halfway through, then it gets kind of crappy.  Wish they could have kept the quality of writing from the first thalf of the song throughout the rest.

The game launched at $29.99 MSRP and with the front cover it has, it's kind of easy to see why it didn't do good, but God Hand turned out to be one of the best action games ever made.  I preordered the game because I was interested, but most people haven't played and if they haven't heard about it online, they probably haven't heard about it either.  If you're a Shinji Mikami fan and you haven't played this, then you're not much of a fan, because it's by far his best game.

God Hand could easily be described as a spiritual Hokuto no Ken or Fist of the the North Star just with comedic story instead.

The gameplay, while it may sound repetitive is actually pretty deep.  You have one main combo which can be changed with over 100 different attacks, as well as four other seperate attacks to add as whatever you want including guard breaks, etc.  Gene, the character you control, cannot block, instead you dodge by using the right analog stick.  You can do special multi hit attacks when the enemy gets stunned.  You also have a set of special attacks within what's called the roulette wheel, kind of wacky attacks that do a good amount of damage, sometimes close range, sometimes ranged, can hit one enemy at a time, some will hit multiple enemies at a time.

This game has multiple difficulties and it's a hard game.  Really fun game, but hard.  Within each difficulty there are four more difficulties, depending on how well you do.  If you go throughout the game, doing tons of damage, not taking any hits, etc, you'll rank from level 1, 2, 3, and die.  Your bonus gold at the end of each stage will be determined on what level you were at when killing these enemies, obvioiusly being on die you'll get the most.  Getting hit on any of these levels will drop the current level or may even reduce it to the previous level, while also taking more damage the higher the level is.  So because you might be on normal, it still gets harder the better you do.

Here's a video for those that might be interested.  Crappy video quality, but good review on it while also gameplay from someone who's good at the game, shows off dodge canceling, etc.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s544sFja5k&feature=player_detailpage#t=24

#43 - Jumping Flash! (Kudos to F0X for guessing this)

A game close to my heart for so many reasons, but not least because it was the first videogame I actually bought.  I tell this story every time but... coming home from school one day, I find my dad playing the PS1 in my front room.  Came with a demo disk loaded with titles but the first one he was playing was this.  I was immediately hooked, finished the demo like 20 times and then we went out to buy the game that weekend.

I won't beat around the bush - Jumping Flash! is dated; it's short; story is silly and there's so much else objectively wrong with it.  And yet it's so playable, even to this day I genuinely believe you could pick it up; blast through it and have a brilliant time with it.

Filled to the brim with creative design; adorable enemies; cool stuff to do and a fantastic sense of scale (seriously, you can reach some massive heights in this game looking down on the world below).  It's kind of a shame that Mario became the genre norm, really.  Although I love that style of 3D platformer, I believe a first-person affair like Jumping Flash! could sit alongside them perfectly.

Of all the IP's Sony could revive, I think this one would actually make it to the top of my list.  A £15 downloadable updated version of this would be an insta-play for me.
