28 drew great amounts of love and hate for its control scheme

Skyward Sword.

Kresnik got it. The hint was inspired by the recent thread on the subject.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

34. The Last Story (NR)

The reason this game makes my list is that it eschews random encounters for scripted fights while still having the battle system focus on tactics rather than execution.  There are numerous environmental and weakness based actions that make the best way to play to the game to figure out what abilities best handle the current situation without requiring too much guesswork. Having all of these set pieces does wonders for the story's world building and really allows you to feel absorbed into the game's wildly varying environments.  It also features a strong melodic piece that was stuck in my head for over a month and draws me back to memories of the game whenever I hear it.  The story has several well crafted characters and presents a number of mature themes in its fantasy world.  I originally played this because of the development team's history with other games on my list and got something different than I was expecting but still wonderful in its own right.

33. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (26)

This game was half the reason I got the system and it did not disappoint for a moment.  Given the limits of the system it's amazing how much content is in this game.  It sometimes seems like games have offered less and less as years go on (my actual theory is that I just go through games quicker these days).  Playing around with all of the items until you got the hang of what to use in every situation was fun on its on.  The dungeons did a good job of guiding you without skipping on the puzzle of making it through successfully.  Finding items that aren't needed but were helpful was often as fun as the main quest itself.  The bosses for the most part each had some quirk for how to damage them without seeming unfair.  The story was about average but they did a good job of setting up the lore of the world.  This was the first time I got to swing around with a hookshot in a 3D game, which I enjoyed thoroughly.

32. Assassin's Creed II (NR)

After playing its predecessor I wasn't sure if I really wanted to stick with the series but I'm glad I did.  Everything about the sequel is improved over the original with the holes that it had.  Combat feels much deeper and more varied and travel around the world is less hampered.  The significant increase in optional content which actually provides fun information and story is a great way to handle allowing each player to choose their own level of involvement in the series' lore.  The characters are much more memorable and have significantly more feeling behind them.  The freerunning aspects are also vastly improved and less tedious to the point where just running through a city is fantastic.

31. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (24)

This was my introduction to the Final Fantasy Tactics series.  This game really shined because of the variety of classes available to use, and I don't think I even managed to use half of them on a regular basis.  The ability to build your own world map makes it so every game can be a little bit different and moving around becomes somewhat interesting.  Adding special characters to the cast provides extra incentive to try to complete as much of the missions as possible.  The law system forces you to use a little more than a basic set of allies for most of the game (until you get Cid later on) and can make what seemed like it would be an easy battle a bit harder.  There are plenty of missions to complete and items to obtain which mix together well to get somewhat of an open world feel to the game.  The variety in available moves provides a large number of viable strategies although high damage moves work a little too well at times.  Setting up your attacks so you don't hit your allies with a spell keeps the battles from becoming too clustered.  Overall the story keeps from getting too dull and offers a second ending for a more complete playthrough.

30. Star Ocean Till the End of Time (42)

This is simply a great sci-fi/fantasy RPG. My favorite game from the Star Ocean series, it has an interesting mix of standard fantasy fare and sci-fi as you're dropped from the stars onto less developed planets.  This was the first game I played with an item creation mechanic and was always excited to see what new items I might be able to invent.  The battle system was close enough to what I was used to that having to keep track of character positioning didn't turn into to big of a deal.  I really loved the story, which presents a fantastical world view that one could only dream of being true (I'm admittedly a little weird in this respect).  In addition the battle trophies were my first introduction to any sort of achievement system and provided neat little challenges (beating a boss without taking damage on accident halfway through the game still confuses me).

Clue for my #28 - There's a level set in a theme park in this game. If you jump in a fountain in this level, a voice over the tannoy will say "Send a plumber for immediate hairball inspection!". If you go on the ferris wheel, the voice will shout "Attention, assassin in the carnival area. Ready the sentries. Deploy the Tesla drones. SHUT DOWN THE TEACUPS!"

And the game is filled with humour like this.

If you guess it from these clues, I will be mightily impressed.
