Because they're like every form of media rolled into one. The cinematics of a movie with the depth of story and character of a book with beautiful set pieces for you to admire like a painting and tons of music to listen to. Playing games provides a constant system of rewards and feelings of accomplishment. As humans we enjoy using our brains and working through difficult challenges. Feats that require good reflexes and coordination are fun and satisfying to attempt.

I play video games because it is literally the only form of entertainment that I control. I am the one who decides what my character does. Plus its a way to just get my mind off of bullshit.

that actually kinda annoys me at times lol, when I'm playing a fighting game like say SF3... I just really wanted to see a characters ending but the end boss of it is as annoying as Sin and yeah was just thinking if this was a movie it was the same as a fight scene which just would go on forever but never move on the story haha.
