I'll be honest, I just find this sad. I have friends like this...where gaming for them has become almost entirely about getting "trophies" or "achievements" rather than playing a game for the socialization, the beauty of the graphics or music, the joy of the exploration, the fun of the gameplay, or the satisfaction of completion/finishing...or in other words, enjoying the game for what it is. I just find the whole "achievement" system to be redundant and unnecessary. It's also a bit patronizing...I mean, obviously if I'm going to play a game I don't think I need something to pop up and say "Achievement Unlocked: Go-Getter" for starting up the game or "Achievement Unlocked: Investigator" for accessing the menu the first time. Obviously I can understand that a lot of the achievements are for very specific, often hard-to-get things and I can see how it could be addicting as it's not really that different from games that focus on shooting for the "highest score" like Arcade games of old. Personally, I'm glad Nintendo doesn't have achievements as I'd find them to be annoying and unnecessary. However, if there was a way to disable them then I'd have no problem with Nintendo offering the option for such a system since I know that does really appeal to a lot of people. I just don't personally want/need it ever.
