Another frustrating reply.

I don't intend to buy an Xbox One. I don't like the Kinect thing, and Zoo Tycoon is a game I would love to play, but it's not enough to buy a console for. I am in this thread for one reason only, try to find out if there is any point in considering buying a PlayStation 4. The answers here won't be the final decission, but what kind of games I can expect from one of the marquee developers on the system will factor in. Again, Xen is (was at least) the only one who address the mechanics of the game. I don't care about 100 people telling me "Uncharted is awesome", I will listen to the one person who can say "Uncharted is awesome becuase it does this, this and this". Then I can decide if those elements are interesting to me, so far I am not much clearer on what to think. I have a feeling that Uncharted plays similar to Assassins Creed, but ironically that is based on the feedback from people who claim the two games are nothing like eachother.

So again, no information form you, except for the little nugget that Zoo Tycoon is a game worthy of looking down upon if I read your tone correctly. If that is the case, I am guessing there are not many games like it in the PlayStation library? Anyway, that is even further off topic and I don't know if I even care to listen to what people might have to say about that. One last thing though, I have never complained about Naughty Dog outside of the initial statement that the only time I played Uncharted it was for a short time and I didn't like it. Everything else has been an attempt to understand the game and the philosophy of Naughty Dog better. The response has been ranging from mild irritation to butthurt as if I pissed on someones diety (ok, perhaps a slight exaggeration).

Why was your experience with the PS2 so negative?

I was going to try this and fail miserably.  I unfortunately haven't played Assassin's Creed a lot, so I'm not sure I can give a very good comparision to that.  Just so that I can give something I can compare to, what are some games that you've played?

I played Shadow of the Colosuss and was filled with rage to the point where I swore of video games forever. I stuck by it for a couple of years too actually, but the 7th generation won me over again.

Anyways, I've played many games, but not many Action Adventure games. I am not really looking for a list of PlayStation games that would suit my needs as that is way outside what this thread should be about. I am basically looking for information on the mechanics of a typical Naughty Dog game. But for reference since you asked I really like games like Bit.TRIP runner, Punch Out, Tetris, Bullet Hell shooters etc. In other words pattern based gameplay. I don't really need a recommendation on those types of games though, I am asking because I am wondering if I should do my kids a solid and buy a second video game console that they will probably love (since they love everything that is new and shiny) without subjecting myself to buyers remorse rage that compromises my love for video gaming.

PS: I am not intereseted in comments on how reasonable or rational it is to swear off a platform based on one game. I know how many of you will react to that information but that doesn't concern me. I make my desicions for myself, not for a bunch of people on a discussion board.

Will buy for the kids, buy Nintendo... want pattern games, maybe fb games?

I already have a Wii U and a Facebook account. I am considering if I should for the first time ever join the ranks of multiple console owners. That is why I am more concerned about games that would be PS4 exclusives and try to determine if it is worth the money and risk to my peace of mind.

Any console that have a Gran Turismo is worth owning =]

Sony have some family friendly games like Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet and Knack (platformers). Uncharted (which I like quite much) is an mix of platform, puzzle (albeit quite easy for me) and 3rd person shooter/ action-adventure... I'm not the best person to talk about shooting part since I don't like much of shooters... but the easiest way to define Uncharted would be to play an Indiana Jones movie (and I would say it mechanic resemble it) or play a polished Tomb Raider (which is muuuuuuuuuch more closer than AC, that even tough I have played little can't say in what they are similar unless by using a control and available on PS3).

Stick with the Wii U. No need for you to waste money and risk your peace of mind.

Thank you for your reply, this is more in line with what I was looking for. If you don't mind, I have a couple of follow up cpmments I would like to hear your take on.

First of all, Assassins Creed is an Action Adventure game, so is Uncharted. While I realize Uncharted also has platforming and first person shooter elements I don't think it's completele meaningless to compare the two games.

So, if you will. There are the specific things in Assassins Creed that I do not particularily enjoy:

- An open world to explore, that requires certain missions to be accomplished that ultimately forces the narrative in the desired direction. I particularily dislike the lengthy cutscenes that is fired up with every new mission you accept

- A word filled with 'side quests' that quikly become very tedious. In Assassins Creed IV thyat I am playing now this is stuff like "Free the pirates" and finding hidden chests or whatever. I grow tired of that stuff extremely quickly

- Climbing, hiding, stalking requires virtually no skill. It's all basically done for you. I am hoping that Uncharted at least has a more complex mechanic for climbing buildings etc. From my limited experience it does, but the platforming still seemed extremely easy when I pleayed it.

- A laughable combat system that offers almost no challenge what so ever.

Finally, worst of all:

When you perform certain things, like a sneak assassination or whatever, it is just a matter of hitting a button at the right time and the games plays an 'awesome' animation of whatever action. This is my number one fear. The QTE. I am wondering if Uncharted utilizes the same mechanic.

These are my main gripes with Assassins Creed. I would like to know how Uncharted compares in these areas.

Edit: I would actually like to know if these mechanics are typical of all Naughty Dog games or not, and if not, what type of game is this new game they are teasing likely to be.

Action/Adventure doesn't always mean the same. In this day and age it also means that a game has a quest of sorts and you input action during a quest whether openworld or linear. Uncharted is closer in genre to Gears of War than it is to Assassins Creed, you can just do more in the linearity of the world you reside (for that moment) than most third person shooters. You can use parkour to leap to other games with the same grace as Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia or a Pitfall game of the past. In a way it is completely meaningless, because the form and function of the two games are very, very different. Openworld games give a certain amount of freedom where you are allowed to roam and exist within it.

As for the questions:

- An open world to explore, that requires certain missions to be accomplished that ultimately forces the narrative in the desired direction. I particularily dislike the lengthy cutscenes that is fired up with every new mission you accept.

- In Uncharted there is no mission to except or a major world to explore. It gives an illusion in the distance that there is choice but you cannot actually do anything but focus on the story, much in the vein of Gears of War. The game uses cutscenes for dramatic progression, which helps because the storytelling in Uncharted is top notch. While you're playing you feel stuck to the story and focused in achieving your goals in the twelve hours in which you are generally gaming.

- Climbing, hiding, stalking requires virtually no skill. It's all basically done for you. I am hoping that Uncharted at least has a more complex mechanic for climbing buildings etc. From my limited experience it does, but the platforming still seemed extremely easy when I pleayed it.

Note: Most of what you wrote on the good and bad can be compiled into one big paragraph so I'll just answer it like that.

- Uncharted has a better system of stealth than Assassins Creed but its not exactly on par with Metal Gear. In Uncharted you don't climb buildings, you're mosing just trying to survive and thats what the parkour and climbing is for. It creates cliffhanger moments where you're hanging off of things for your life and trying to survive. The protagonist is a brilliant, but fun loving guy who just seems to always find himself accepting quests where he has to search for treasure and some supernatural being, rich person or pirate is tailing him. It's great. The platforming is fairly easy, but then again on most console games there is auto assist even in shooting games. It doesn't mean that your hand is being held though. Uncharted two has most of the stealth missions. Every game brings out more out of a different part of the system. The first Uncharted delves more into the shooting and fighting, second is stealth and shooting (mixed-bag) and the third has a lot of everything. Uncharted has a Punching and evasion system where you attack with square and dodge with triangle. There are commands that make it look like a quicktime, but its not. You can punch as you please, you kind of just need to keep from getting shot and pick your fights properly. Uncharted uses QTE's but mostly in part three, but really in two or one. People are seriously overdoing it. God of War is the top Hack N slash right now for Sony and that one has QTE's but no one complains. QTE's just provide sick finishers after a hard fought battle.

The last of Us has a combat system which is based off of Uncharted but bloodier and more focused.

The review helps to watch so you see the progression, but Uncharted is one of the most influential franchises of the gen. The Last of Us IS one of the greatest games of this generation, period. If it doesn't get game of the year over GTA (which I loved as well) I don't know...seriously.

All those companys i have mention have made massive dents in the awards industry. Doesnt matter who wins more awards, look at World of Warcraft, doesnt win any awards yet its claimed to be the greatest MMO ever to exist and still running. Halo is classed as 1 of the best FPS games to buy on the market. Mario and Zelda and heaps more franchises just own there genras, ND games are the same but i rate ND like i would with 343 and Retro. There not bigger then Valve, Nintendo and Blizzard and thats a fact. Google that one.

Well if the games that good shouldnt the masses be buying it? 5mill is an average sales count for a good game, its not legendary or great. Half Life 1 and 2 sold more then 12mill each, GTA and Cod sell over 10mill easy, Mario Kart and Halo sell over 8mill easy. Blizzard games sell more then 8mill. Games like RE 5 and 6 sell around the same as Uncharted or TLOU so does Tomb Raider.  NG games to me are no bigger then Resident Evil or Tomb Raider.

Comparing ND to 343 is a joke, they aren't even remotely close. How many franchises has 343 created? Zero? Oh... Meanwhile ND managed to create Crash, the only guy who holds his ground next to Mario and Sonic. They created Jak and Daxter - maybe not a revolutionary franchise, easily their worst effort, but still a very good one (this tells a lot - a very good game is their worst ever). Later on we have Uncharted and TLoU - games that revolutionalised their genre (just see the new Tomb Raider) and are the face of their platform, all showered with awards. Rare? When was the last time they made a good game? How many generations ago was that? You can't be serious comparing a long dead studio to ND. To sum up, ND easily stands right next to Valve, Nintendo and Blizzard as the best devs ever.

You could compare Uncharted to RE or TR, but only in their primes, when they were the biggest games out there, exciting players all over the world, selling and shaping the original Playstation. Comparing UC to what is left from RE or TR now is a misunderstanding.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Thank you for this replay. I seriously appreciate the time and effort you have put in, and this is the kind of reply I find extremely helpful.

From what I can gather, Uncharted is probably not a game I would like all that much. I suspect I would play it for a few days to a week before getting bored of it (this is setting in with Assassisn Creed after three play sessions for reference) but I am pretty sure there are other people in my family who would love this. If the game allowes for randomly running around the world gunning down innocent bystanders it would most likely be a guaranteed superhit in my house, but there is a reason why I don't want my kids to play GTA.

For anyone keeping score: If I decide to double down on consoles, surprisingly I would lean towards a PlayStation 4 at this time. I will look into a couple more games and see if it makes sense to dish out to cash.

Uncharted is nothing like GTA if that's what you think :P It's pretty much an action-adventure movie in which you play the main role. Think Indiana Jones type of adventure.

You missed my point. The reference was that if Uncharted allows you to run around and randomly kill charatcers in the world for no good reason, I am sure it would be a smash hit in my household. (My kids spend an unreasonable amount of time in Assassins Creed assassinating for no good reason). But, if I wanted to get them a game where you randomly murder people, I would be getting GTA, which I won't, bacause I don't want them to play games that way.

That said, when people say the game plays like a movie I get a very bad vibe. Games that play like a movie is perhaps my least favorite thing in the world.
