At first I thought that was a life bar in the top left of the screen, which would be a first for the series, but on closer inspection that's just where the Ring counter is.

I don't see the purpose that'd serve if rings serve the same function they always have. Plus the counter says 099, meaning you could get up to 999 rings, yet the bar is already full at 99.
