Woo just ordered a White WiiU Pro Controller for MK8. Will sit the Gamepad in front of my TV if I can have it display map, places etc. while I use the pro controller.

From what I've seen, the gamepad screen goes blank when you use the pro controller.

Oh well, saves me having to charge it every hour =P

This Week in Nintendo History

Final Fantasy 6 came out in Japan, back on April 2, 1994, 20 years ago.

Final Fantasy 6 was part of a turning point in the Final Fantasy series. For one thing, it was the first game in the main series not to be directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the guy who created the series back on the Famicom. Although Sakaguchi would have a Producer's role, the Directors of FF6 wereYoshinori Kitase, the future director of Final Fantasy 7, 8, 10, and Chrono Trigger, and Hiroyuki Ito, the future director of 9 and 12. Both directors were veterans of the series, with Ito being the guy who invented the ATB Battle system back in FF4.  In other words, the reins of the series were being passed on to trusted developers who had proven their worth and would continue to earn their pay for years to come.

With this change in leadership of the series came major changes in the game itself. Final Fantasy 6 departed from the predominantly gameplay oriented traditional European fantasy of the Sakaguchi era and entered a world of more in-depth storytelling and fantasy inspired by science fiction. Those latter elements still resonate strongly in the most recent entries in the series. Even relatively simple elements of 6, such as the Relic system which allowed for more customization of characters' gameplay, were reflected in the design philosophy of latter entries.

With the increased emphasis on story came a massive expansion in the cast of characters. Final Fantasy 6 only allowed for four party members to fight on the line of battle, but the cast included a whopping fourteen main playable characters, as well as a number of temporary playable characters. These characters included some of the most beloved in Final Fantasy history, including royalty, a knight, a disgraced general, a thief treasure hunter, a gambler, a ninja, an artist... it was quite the strong cast.

None of these characters were quite as well received as the game's ultimate villain: Kefka. Within the Final Fantasy fandom, only 7's Sephiroth competes with this manical master of evil. Where other villains have been stopped by sorrier casts of heroes, this one managed to be fairly sucessful, literally changing the face of the world to mark his power. To this day, his signature theme and Final Boss music is regarded as some of the best music in gaming history.

Speaking of music, the rest of FF6's soundtrack was no slouch either. Many characters have leitmotifs used in multiple pieces, and the sheer variety of tunes is incredible. The soundtrack release in 1994 included over three hours of music, divided into dozens of songs, ranging from the half-minute Victory fanfare to the nearly 20 minute long Dancing Mad.

FF6 was a big step in the history of the series, and it paid off. According to VGChartz, Final Fantasy 6 was the best-selling game of 1994 in Japan, with over 2.5 million copies that year alone. VGChartz also states that the game was the seventh best-selling SNES game of all time in Japan, beaten only by Dragon Quest, Street Fighter, and a couple of Nintendo titles. Sales of FF6 were nearly double of those of FF4. What the critics had to say is largely lost in time, thanks to the lack of internet reviewers in April 1994, but the game received plenty of great to perfect scores from Western publications and some awards pretty shortly after release.

Today, the game is still remembered as an all-time great in the JRPG genre. Game Informer named it the eighth best game of all time in 2009, IGN gave it the #9 position in 2007, and you can see it ranked in various other Top 10 Games EVAR" listsover the years here. That last link suggests that FF6 alone has left a greater legacy by itself than a lot of Companies (It appears in 1 out of every 4 or 5 lists, which is not bad considering some of these lists are from publications like PC Gamer and such).

If you want to play Final Fantasy 6, you can get it in a variety of ways. Other than the SNES release, you can get it on the Game Boy Advance and Wii Virtual Console. There are also PlayStation and mobile versions of the game. I'm personally playing the GBA version at the moment.

"There are too many moments in Final Fantasy VI worthy of celebration to name them all. Biggs and Wedge leading Terra through the snow. The poisoning of Doma. Sandy boots. The destruction of the world. A tragic opera. Ultros! We hold these close to our hearts, and that's not even including Espers and the most poignant character themes in the series to date. So cheers, Final Fantasy VI. May your name follow us as we all tumble towards the future of art, entertainment, narrative, and everything that keeps us gaming." - Some IGN writer
