Yes, a Metroid game would do far more for their image and draw in an audience there don't already have locked down, but they don't care, they make what they want to make, without stopping to think about what the market wants. If Diddy Kong Racing means they can reuse assets from Tropical Freeze and the engine from Mario Kart 8 to make a quick buck, that's what they'll do, without a thought as to how it will further harm their reputation.

I think in terms of Nintendo listening to gamers this gen, it's been about 50/50. Yes, they made DKC: TF before Metroid. Yes, they didn't make Galaxy 3 or Sunshine 2, but Super Mario 3D World. Yes, they didn't give MP10 online multiplayer like fans wanted. But they also localized Fatal Frame 5 (which they haven't done in the history of them owning the franchise, even on the Wii), they payed for the development of Bayonetta 2 (and helped port Bayonetta 1), they've delivered new IPs like Splatoon, revived old ones like Star Fox and Pikmin, and even went the full mile with Smash 4 by allowing players to play with a GameCube controller, play in For Glory only online and opened a fighter ballot so fans could vote for their favorite characters.
In summary, no, Nintendo doesn't always listen. But they do sometimes. And it's those times when it matters the most and has the most impact. Metroid on Wii U may or may not happen, but I wouldn't count it out just yet.
