Some shareholders with a lack of understanding might, But have a look at the facial expression on Andrew House after he the reaction from its announcement

Plus while they announced no DRM and 399, they slipped in the paywall and pretty much got away with it. The amount of new subscribers will make up that difference in no time

But they could have made a profit on each unit sold on top of the PS+ subscription fees. They were going to sell all their inventory at launch regardless.

Sony could have done the $399 price tag for the 2014 holiday if they felt sales needed to be stimulated. If X1 sales need to be stimulated, it will likely become $399 a year from now.

Most casuals probably won't buy a PS4 at $400 either. They will wait for price cuts. Look at PS3, it didn't sell well at $400. But it did gangbusters at $300, $250, and $199.

You'd be surprised at what people will pay so there kids can have the newest thing for christmas. Why do you think reselling works?

No, what some people will pay. Not what the masses will pay.

They should have gone with $299.99 like the PS2 and BURIED Microsoft IMO. Why not take a bigger loss (but still profit due to massive install base buying lots of games) and eliminate your competition? Makes more sense to me.

What are you basing this on? The reality we're seeing with iPhones and other gadgets selling so fast at such high prices show differently.

Or are you arguing for arguing sake?

I don't think this thread is asking if they're happy because of praise they're getting from gamers. People seem to forget Sony is a company and a companies main objective is to make a profit. So, I think they may have been happier listing it at $450 and only losing $10 per console?

Bingo.

As a consumer the price seems fantastic. But since demand is so great and the X1 price is higher, surely Sony must be considering they could have sold the console for more and still be the market leader.

Nope, because MS would have said "Looks! Same price but you get Kinect!" and that would hurt PS4 sales.

No, Sony would have argued you're getting a more powerful machine over Kinect.

Sony fans are core gamers and would argue they prefer power over the Kinect.

Power is a hard sell to gamers...perhaps the core gamers will be aware but the rest wont. Kinect on the other hand is something tangible and immediately seen as added value.

Like BenV mentioned in his thread...most people pre-ordering dont give a shit about half the stuff discussed on forums like power/resolution/graphics etc.

And while these factors are certainly not pointless (casuals talk about these things too) but its doesnt justify a much higher price whereas Kinect does. To the average consumer that is.

its about grabbing the early market share because "what there friends have"  is a deciding factor for alot of people.  Coming out cheaper is very important and the high price tag of the ps3 really hurt them.   They did not want to be infront of that bus again.  There are several interviews where they discuss the price tag and how its what they wanted to deliver and how proud they are to have achieved it.

"Hes the clown that makes the dark side fun.. Torgo!"

Ha.. i won my bet, but i wasnt around to gloat because im on a better forum!  See ya guys on Viz

I don't think so. I agree the $100 difference may not make much of a difference sales-wise this fiscal year, but in the mid-long term it's gonna help their marketshare a lot vs MS, which will boost their profits throughout the generation.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

as long as they're profiting from the hardware, no need to be greedy. $400 isn't chmp change, either. Many gamers will be looking for a price drop.

MS would just drop the price of their hardware as well as opposed to being eliminated. Lets remember MS can eat more losses than Sony.

MS is selling most of their inventory at $500. My brother attempted to pre order a X1 but they are all sold out around here. Maybe next year they will need to do a price cut, but they're doing fine with the current price right now.
