Forums - Nintendo - Time also called on Wii in Europe (Wii Mini Lives On)

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/time-also-called-on-wii-in-europe/0123162

If you're in the UK and in the market for a Wii, now is the time to act.

Having confirmed that the machine is no longer being supplied to the Japanese market, Nintendo has now revealed that Europe too will not be receiving any further stock of the machine.

“Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued,” a Nintendo UK rep told MCV. “However, there are still a variety of options for consumers to enjoy Wii games and the Wii gameplay experience.

“Wii U, which is Nintendo's latest home console, is backwards compatible with nearly all existing Wii games and accessories, so you can enjoy a vast library of disc-based and downloadable Wii games and Wii gameplay experiences when you switch to Wii Mode on Wii U.

“Wii Mini is also now available across Europe offering Wii gameplay experiences at a great value. Wii Mini puts the focus squarely on games with over 1200 existing disc-based Wii titles to choose from.”

The Wii will live on in the American market for the time being.

Edited the title for a bit of clarity. Wii Mini will still be available.

Regardless, the Wii's time in the sun has been over for a while now. Sleep well, sweet prince...

Not compatible with gamecube games, no component capability, no online; thank you Nintendo for making this amazing redesign of the Wii the only version available.

It's also the only one available on Amazon.ca (Canada) since a while.

Well... at this point there´s no real advantage in buying a Wii anymore

I get the lack-of-Gamecube complaint in theory, but not in practice. If you're super dedicated to the Gamecube and want the ability to play that console on your system... and are only buying a Wii now in 2013 after it's been on the market for 7 years... who are you exactly? I don't believe for a second the kind of people who still have all these Gamecube games they still want to be able to play are also people who haven't already had a Wii for years.

Wii's life cycle is already over and Gamecube's is long over. Should Nintendo really be expected to provide users a way to play games on a console from 12 years ago? Were you pissed off in 2003 that you had no way to play your Super Nintendo games on a console out now? No. If it's that important to you, just find a used Gamecube or Wii. It will be easy to do - it's like 30 bucks on eBay. Problem solved.

Eh. I didn't know it was available still.
As soon as I heard of GC BC going away back in late 2011, I got a Wii. I was thinking it'd not be available in its form anymore, buuut.. well... now it isn't.

I agree with you regarding the ability to play Gamecube games, but I still think it's a poor redesign of the Wii; the lack of component compatibility makes it a no buy for any non-casual gamer.

i find it ironic that the most succesful 7th gen home console has the shortest life. ): oh well, i loved ya wii! even though people claimed you didn't have any hardcore games.
