Forums - Gaming - What happened to 3D Gaming?

It's waiting for an HD Occulus rift and similar devices while next-gen consoles have shot themselves in the foot by not waiting for HDMI 2.0. (Although they probably aren't powerful enough anyway for 1080p60 3D)

3D is not a selling point, neither is steady 60fps, or full 1080p. As long as the bull shots and trailers look great the marketing department is happy.

I think it's about people's perceptions. They're perfectly happy with seeing something that isn't real as something that doesn't look real. But it does immerse you into a movie/game. It's almost as if the world around you instead becomes 2D and that inside world is the real world. I think people are just scared about witnessing things from another point of view. I personally love it.

Dont we go through this shit every 10 years or so?

3D gaming is quite

The people who'd most likely do a trade off on 3D are the indies or Silicon Studio who dove deep into the 3DS

Thats totally hilarious, how is it possible that u know that Nintendo is distancing themselves

2DS ring a bell?

Isn't the new Zelda suppose to use the 3D more than previous games? It wasn't until the release of the 2DS they had to tweak it so the experience would be similar in 2D

2DS went one step beyond proving that stereo sound is overrated. Children become partially deaf sooner and sooner anyway, due to listening to awful loud music, soon enough sound itself will become redundant.

It's a shame pokemon 3D is half baked... not everywhere and heavy slowdown otherwise. there's no excuse really and that's the main thing I was dissapointed about in an otherwise stellar game.

But it's definetely a niche otherwise. A lot of games support 3D gaming on PC, and even if it doesn't you can force it which gets mixed-great results. With consoles, it creates a whole lot of issues that they have to deal to get the performance up to par (Decrease resolution, particle effects, draw distance, textures, etc), for a assumingly very small adoption rate.

Though they could. Because PC games typically scale and 3D is an option, so they could do the same thing with consoles.

Um no any slow down is entirely up to code.

How many 3D games have you played anyway? I can give you many instances where that is not the case

I have been wondering about 3D too. Most new TV are 3D compatible. It's just no longer the biggest selling feature.

While there were several last gen games there were 3D as you stated. I'd add Star Wars Kinect, Gears of War 3, and Halo CE: Anniversary to your list. Neither the PS3 or Xbox 360 really had the power to pull it off as well as it should.

When Microsoft reveal the feature in the ".1" update to DirectX 11 the major thing it added was 3D support. Allowing developers to use or make a game 3D much more easily. DirectX 11.1 is only available on Windows 8. I think we have yet to see what they will do with it.

I think the biggest thing holding it back is the glasses. People don't like having to wear the glasses. With goggles, like the Occlus Riff, it's not as much of an issue other than putting them on themselves. (Personally I like the passive 3D much better than active shutter.)

While we just haven't seen what the PS4/X1 can do with 3D. But I think many people are waiting for those amazing 'glasses free' 3D TVs.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

With regards to 60fps and 1080p I think the fuss over Call of Duty potentially being 720p is showing that 1080p is currently a potential selling point. (though I personally don't really get why as I'd rather has stable frame rate and a good game)

For 60fps, although people don't consciously buy a 60fps game, I think there's a reason Call of Duty was the FPS which suddenly exploded this generation and I think 60fps is a big part of that reason.

You should be seeing lots of indies supporting the feature since they usually don't push the polygons.

The big players are too busy right now trying to sell next gen's graphics so no 3D for them. Assassin's Creed is doing it since they use depth mapping which is a lot lighter on system resources yet doesn't look at all as good.

Great post
