I think Anime in general is aimed at a more mature audience than Cartoons. That could just be me though.

Anime is just the way japanese people call what we call cartoons... -__-

"Anime" and "cartoons" are just semantics. In the end, it is all animation. If you want a catch all term for moving drawings, there it is.

I've never heard Japanese use 'anime," they just say like "animation" with their Japanese accent that goes ani-may-shien lol. I do remember people using Japanimation though, that's the 90s' lol.

I've heard japanese use the word "anime" a lot. It's very common to abbreviate things in Japan by dropping syllables, like "pokèmon", which originally was named pocket monsters or "poketto monsta". Similarly while the official word is "animation" in normal conversations it usually is called "anime".

not on my end for some reason, maybe I'm too formal lol.

You can't go wrong with 'animation'.  It's really the correct term and it's free of the context associated with either 'anime' or 'cartoons'.  Whatever the terms mean technically, they've both become linked with particular styles.

When I first got involved with anime, back when we used to trade VHS tapes online, the term most people used was 'Japanimation', which sucked to type out all the time.  Then the people who were actually acquiring and translating the raws from Japan began borrowing the same word the Japanese used, 'anime', and I was glad it caught on.  'Japanimation' sounds lame.

No, 'anime' is a Japanese word.  Even though the origin is likely English, we're borrowing the word back.  It's commonly used in Japan.

Origin:
1980s: Japanese, shortened from animēshon, based on English animation   http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/anime

Ok? Anime is just a shorter version of animation, which means animated film or cartoon. It's mostly used to describe animated films made in Japan but I've seen it used with western stuff as well.

Why hasn't this thread evolved into a discussion about Hentai and Porn?

Yeah I know that???????

Yeah, you aren't wrong.

noun
1.
a simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way, esp. a satirical one in a newspaper or magazine.
synonyms: caricature, parody, lampoon, satire; More
a comic strip.
synonyms: comic strip, comic, funnies, graphic novel More
a simplified or exaggerated version or interpretation of something.
"this movie is a cartoon of rural life in America"
2.
a motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects.
synonyms: animated film, animation; More

But then again, going by the definition, you could argue that video games are cartoons too, same with paintings and so on.

Anime is a classification of a type of animation. As is cartoon. They're not the same, but neither is inherently worse than the other.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."
