Thanks Microsoft

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Personally, I don´t hate Microsoft, but there´s nothing on its current or future console that calls my attention. Most of its best games can be played either on a PC or on a PS3, which has a more interesting exclusive games line-up to my tastes.

For users of their gaming consoles they delivered:
- Fantastic new ip's
- Great controller
- kinect
- insanely good online services
- amazing looking games without the need to get a gaming pc
- vision and innovation ( digital distribution, cloud services )
- insane game library

For non users they delivered:
- Competition
- Pushing first parties to deliver
- new ideas to copy and to be implemented

So be happy with their presence!

Don't like Kinect, online seems the same and always has to me, Sony did day 1 digital first for years, Sony bought Gaikai for cloud, "insane game library" had been done before though I guess it's nice but still not anything that the competition doesn't have, the games look better on PC still and PS3 and PS4 are more powerful systems which have/will have better looking exclusives, PS2 was awesome with almost 0 competition and besides Nintendo can do this just fine (love Nintendo and Sony), the first parties were delivering before MS and they would have to compete for software sales anyway, and as far as the last one goes...achievements?  or what?

Thanks Steve Gates!

I think M$ brought a lot to the table.
They had true online and a hard drive with the first xbox.
-They created a more interesting online through achievements.
-The 360 controller was the best of its generation.
-Even though Kinect 1.0 didn't have a cool glowing ball that required you to hold a controller, it does provide a different option for both motion gaming and system control.
-Many can argue this, but i think it played an integral part in making gaming "cool" in america. M$ spent a shit ton of money advertising the first xbox and creating a culture of breaking the PC enthusiast image of gaming is for nerds

Did M$ reinvent the wheel? No, there were plenty of video game companies before both M$ and Sony that laid the groundwork. Both companies have taken what was in the marketplace and put their own spin on it.

Eh, i think nintendo is probably more to blame for making fps games popular with goldeneye.

Wasn't Rare the one who made the game? Besides, while Golden Eye was very popular it didn't influence the market as much as Call of Duty. I mean Golden Eye did 7 million which is awesome but Call of Duty manages to do 20 million for each installment. Also Halo helped popularize the genre. I don't think it's Nintendo's fault at all xD.

Yeah, rare made it... When they were owned by nintendo.  Also, we are talking about who made the genre popular, not what is popular now.  Halo and call of duty are popular, successful fps games, but the genre was already popular before they came to the market.

Nintendo... never owned Rare... that is why Microsoft bought them. Yeah they where already popular but saying it was because of Golden Eye is incorrect. I'm pretty sure it was Doom the responsible for the genres populairty.

-Kinect: my little one enjoys it a lot (playing Kinectimals, disney games and other carnival games)
-RPG games such as Lost Odyssey, Elder Scrolls (Oblivion when it first came out), Blue Dragon, the Witcher 2.
-Gaming with friends (most of my buddies only multiplayer on Xbox 360)

Fine, nintendo never owned them completely, just owned a majority stake.  Big difference I know.  Also, nintendo published goldeneye, so why are we even splitting hairs here?

Sure, doom popularized the fps genre on pc, and goldeneye popularized the fps genre on consoles.  Either way, I wouldnt blame microsoft

Yeah sure, I don't really blame Microsoft. They just helped the genre, but it was other games who popularized the genre. Besides it's not like it's something bad! I hate most FPS but I know some good ones! Like Bioshock or Half-Life (although the laters it is kinda overrated).
