Forums - Nintendo - Top 5 Biggest Flops On A Nintendo System In 2013? (WiiU/3DS in One Category)

2. 95% of the 3rd parties

I disagree. We've established that the absolute biggest flop so far this year is Brain Age, a Nintendo franchise. By contrast, even niche third-party titles like Shin Megami Tensei IV, Etrian Odyssey, Monster Hunter (in the West), and others (espeically Atlus's games) have sold well enough considering their expectations to NOT be considered flops -- to say nothing of games like Dragon Quest VII, Monster Hunter 4, Ace Attorney, etc. that have sold extremely well and are definitely not flops.

The only third-party game I can think of even browsing through lists of 3DS and Wii U games this year that I would definitely call a flop is Castlevania: Mirror of Fate. And I suppose Splinter Cell as well.

Basically, if you really think 95% of third-party games released on Nintendo consoles so far this year are flops, start naming names. Preferably about 95 names, since I just named more than 5 not-flops.

Around the Network

1. W101
2. Brain Age
3. Game+Wario
4. Pokemon Rumble WiiU
5. Castlevania

Everyone in this thread has forgotten Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate. Part of an established franchise that sold well on DS, yet to hit 100k. It is surpassed only by Brain Age on Nintendo consoles this year in terms of floppage.

I was going to post this too.

It seems Layton is a shadow of its former self as well. We'll see how it does in the west but I'm not optimistic.

I wouldn't really call Layton a flop. Its sales have been declining steadily over the course of several releases. There was no reason to expect his recent games to sell better than any previous ones. Certainly still disappointing considering what it once was, but the true flops of this year would kill for the over 200k he's racked up in Japan alone.

Seriously, everone calling W101 the number 1 flop: reconsider that ranking. Look at Castlevania's sales. Take all of the factors into consideration. Don't get swept up in the Wii U doom. Castlevania is selling fewer than 500 copies weekly. This is a 27-year-old franchise.

Also have to conider it released 3 months before another Layton game. But Mask of Miracle didn't do too shabby in Japan. 400k for a launch title is pretty impressive.

Fair enough, but I don't think the Wii U has even had enough 3rd-party games this year to come out to 95%. That would be 20 3rd-party games!

That's a tougher one to contest, since it depends on whether or not you consider a game like LEGO City: Undercover (developed by TT Games of Warner Bros, published by Nintendo) a 3rd-party title, or whether you would count Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, released in Japan last year and the West this year. Whether or not Rayman counts as a flop is a matter of hot debate lately.

You may as well just say 95% of all Wii U games in general this year, since Pikmin and Lego are the only ones that easily stand out as not-flops. But that would mean 38 other games were released for Wii U this year, which I don't think is the case.

Well I believe lego city is a 2nd party game :)
and I actually mean 95% of the 3rd parties on the wiiu.

Wonderful 101

A new Brain Age was released this year? What? I've totally missed it. Literally never seen anything about this game. No preview, review, trailer or ANYTHING. Wow, one of the most successful NDS games reduced to nothing. At least Nintendogs still got over a million...
