Forums - General - Do atheists say Goodbye?

As you may not know, the world "Goodbye" is an abbreviation of "God be with ye" so now that you know that, why do atheists say it? Shouldn't it be "FUKRELIGIONGODDOESNTEXISTIMAGOGETMADONLINEANDACTANDMAKEANDTELLEVERYONEHOWEDGYIAMONLINEBECAUSE-

Technically, "God" comes from proto-indo-european, either for "that which is invoked" or "poured", depending on who you ask. Nothing says that "that which is invoked" needs to be a deity.

Guess what - most atheists couldn't give a crap about the origins of words; we barely care about the origins of actions and events. Atheists routinely celebrate christmas, for instance, and we don't reduce it to the original pagan event, either - we celebrate based on how Saint Nikolaos of Myra did, just as christians do. We just don't see the need for the religious part of it.

There are atheists out there who take offense at the existence of religion, and who try to remove all religious references from their lives; they are the equivalent of religious fundamentalists.

I usually use "Auf Wiedersehen" which means "See you later" in english. However I don't see the Problem with "Goodbye". Just transfer the meaning to "God be with ye, he sure isn't with me".
I also always though atheists are more tolerant than religious people. However than I discovered the internet and it seems there are just as many atheists, who want to show that there is no god, as religous people who want to show that their beliefs are right.
I have nothing against religion as long as nobody forces me to waste time with someone who doesn't listen or talks to us and whose last action was app. 2000 years ago.

Oh and Atheism is a religion. A belief in nothing is still a belief

Hitler wasn't an atheist. The best description of him would be "pseudo-pagan". He believed in the Christian god, but he also believed in other supernatural powers. He was never an atheist - indeed, he associated atheism with communism, which was a philosophy that was the polar opposite of what he believed in.

As for atheism being a religion, you seem to confuse the phrase "atheism" with what we often call "Strong Atheism". Most atheists would describe their view as "Lacking a belief in a deity". That is, we are atheists for the lack of a reason to believe. "Strong atheists", who I often think of as "Dogmatic atheists" (which contrasts with "Agnostic atheists" and "Scientific atheists", the former of which believe you can't know if there's a deity and so should not operate as though there is one, and the latter of which simply wants evidence before belief), have a firm belief that there is no deity. There is a big difference between absence of belief in a deity and believing in the absence of a deity.

Stalin was a Strong Atheist. So is Richard Dawkins. Please don't confuse such people with the typical atheist, just as I would not associate typical American Christians with the Westboro Baptist Church.

Ironically, the Westboro Baptist people are some of the most true Christians I've come across, if adherence to the Bible is anything to go by..

Oh the irony of someone getting angry online about so called 'angry atheists'

I think that the evolution of the english language has changed the definition of the word 'Goodbye'

This isnt the 16th century anymore.

Hitler was not an atheist, he was a devout christian. Do your research.

And atheism is a religion in the same way that not playing football is a sport.

Your logic is completely flawed.

Christmas is done in winter in an attempt to help the transition for nonChristians of the time.

Many Christian holidays have changed over the years to help people of other religions just like it was with Christmas.

I wonder if you complain on New Years that it isnt actually the "New year" or run around throwing it in peoples faces like it matters that a year is not exactly 365 days?

As for the Sabath I think that was made pretty clear in Genesis. Also many are not off on Sundays as they would be fired. Seems only certain religions are free to express their religous freedoms

"Seems only certain religions are free to express their religious freedoms" I agree to an extent Christianity is often a big bully in the USA.

The Christian Sabbath is not even Sunday, but sun down on Friday to sun down on Saturday.

Religions adapt and borrow from each other all the time.  Many Christian Saints were Gods and other important figures in other religions.  Even the Hebrew story of the Flood and Noah was taken from and earlier culture.

Oh, by the way, when someone swears ‘Goddamit!’ it’s not about religion, but a swearing against an old knight.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Common term. It's like saying "I'm going to hoover the house." when I mean vacuum clean the house with my Vax brand Vacuum Cleaner. :P

That said, I really only use 'Bye' on the phone and 'see you later' or 'laters' in real life.

Hmm, pie.

Yes, I say goodbye.

Aju, Doei, Later, Houje,

Hmm seems my atheism has gotten the best of me.
