There is at least one major problem with comparing Sega with Nintendo. When Sega started dieing it had nothing to fall back on. When or if Nintendo starts dieing it has tons of money and a very successful handheld.

An accurate description for the author is "idiot".

1) Nintendo has better financials than Sega.

2) Smartglass and Sony handhelds are even worse things than the Wii U Gamepad. That's actually so pathetically desperate that this has to be a joke article. In that case I would take back my opening line.

3) The nature of video game systems is that the cycle resets to 0 for everyone every few years. So the implication of a Wii U failure is the same that the GameCube failure had: It won't matter for the following generation. A centralized cloud-based PC thing isn't going to put an end to Nintendo's run, because it can easily be one-upped by a different controller standard. Nintendo would have the games to sell their own hardware while the PC thingies could only have an additional peripheral that developers wouldn't use due to low market penetration, thus making the whole retaliation a moot point. Nevermind that Nintendo has the most valuable portfolio of IPs in the business. There's nobody that can compete with them, the biggest threat is Nintendo destroying themselves by trying to make another port machine like the GameCube or Wii U.

Right now the only company that is on its way out is Sony in the handheld market.

Agreed. Bad article is bad.

If Nintendo wanted they could probably buy Sega, release a new console (with all of Segas IP's backing them up as well - and remember that Sega recently bought Atlus as well) and STILL have money left in the bank.

I'm also willing to bet that there will ALWAYS be a (niche) market for console games, no matter how big the smartphone/tablet market grows. In its current form there's just so many things mobile devices can't do, and that's what will save (a portion) of the conole market, at the very least.

Nintendo's strenght (and arguebly its weakness as well) is that they don't depend on 3rd party as much as MS and/or Sony - which means they're kinda existing in their own little bubble. MS, Sony, Apple, Google, EA and Activision won't be able to bring down Ninty for quite a few years more!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Other than the fact that both the DC and the Wii U are/were in way over their heads with respect to their competition (at least the DC showcased some truly next-gen graphics and features when it launched, instead of just being a slightly faster PS1/N64), they have absolutely nothing in common.

The DC was a well designed, yet ill fated console coming off a disastrous generation that saw SEGA going from battling it out with Nintendo for #1 to being relegated to a distant third place and into near irrelevancy. Nintendo on the other hand is coming off an against-all-odds all time high with the Wii, only to shoot themselves in the foot by launching a poorly conceived and terribly marketed console as its successor, topped off by a launch and first year that was so bad it made the Saturn's look good.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Hehe. Good one.

OT: Difference right now is that us Nintendo fans will be buying all the "Mario software" they throw at us and enough for a next cycle.

The article is poor but when I saw the title I thought this was talking about a hypothetical merger of Nintendo and Sega - something that the more I think about it could be very interesting, not sure if it would be successful but that's a different story.

Systems Currently Playing: WiiU, PS3, 3DS

Also Have: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, PS1, N64, PS2, Wii, GB, GBC, GBA, DSLite, DSi, Android (RazorMax), iPhone (4), iPad (2)

Nah, maybe the next Nintendo 64. It was a big decline in hardware sales compared to its predecessor but still sold a massive amount of 1st party software.

If the Wii U launched for $199 and didn't include that tablet control it would have sold much better. The Dreamcast on the other hand never had a chance.

I will only worry when Ninty starts going into the red which if I am not mistaken they have never been on.

No this article is wrong, Nintendo doesn't have financial problems, Sega had a lot of financial troubles when the Dreamcast was released (I think they started with money problems since the Sega CD) and Sega didn't have a money maker handheld like the 3DS, the 3DS alone makes a lot of profit for Nintendo, so they won't go anywhere.
Honestly I don't know why is some people so anxious to see Nintendo go like Sega.

P.S. Sega didn't have Pokemon. End of the discussion.
