In Japan, of course.
I know this thread is about Japan, but I have to ask... what can (or theoretically should have) propel the Vita to success in the West? Because it has Uncharted, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, LittleBigPlanet, FIFA, Need for Speed -- all very popular series in the West, most of them brand new titles and not just ports -- and it recently received a price cut. Yet still it is consistently selling less on a weekly basis in America and Europe than the 3DS sold even before its price cut, when its most noteworthy title was a remake of Ocarina of Time.
So maybe what I'm asking is, if taking Monster Hunter crippled the Vita in Japan, what move did Nintendo (or Sony) make that crippled the Vita elsewhere? Why has it failed to recapture the PSP audience in North America and Europe?

Those types of games never really sold the PSP

Well what games did? At a glance, it looks like the system's bestselling games in North America were GTA, Daxter, and some racing games, including NFS. The Vita has a NFS and Jak & Daxter collection, so all it's missing there is GTA. It has Ratchet & Clank as well, and God of War is coming (1 & 2 collection), other top-selling representatives on PSP. Will GOW do it? I have a hard time believing GTA is the one and only game that could propel the Vita to PSP numbers, since the three GTA games on PSP sold a combined ~9.5 million units between NA and Europe compared to the ~45 million hardware sales in those regions. Liberty City Stories was really the only one with impressive sales.
Is GTA really the make-or-break franchise for Sony's handhelds in the West? And Monster Hunter in Japan? If the Vita got GTA: Los Santos Stories, would that do the trick?
