After building my latest gaming PC, I realised the reality of diminishing returns. PS4 might have 10 times the power of the PS3, but games will not look 10 times better. They will look like sharper, smoother-running versions of what is out now with better lighting and some other effects. I used to get butthurt that I spend $2000 building a PC and that devs where able to get decent ports of the same games running on 7 year old hardware. The new consoles might be able to perform as well as my 2012 build through optimisations (not sure how many TFLOPS my video cards are but it's well over 2), but I can't see there being anything mind blowing this coming gen. Diminishing returns are upon us.

Its also because devs target consoles, and scale up for PCs, you will start to see a big bump in visual quality in the next few years now there not having to cater for 7-8 year old tech anymore. This has been the main cause of your diminishing returns.

I want to believe that, but I don't.

I promise the biggest bump you will see is in lighting and lighting effects, as these required fundamental changes in engines to upgrade, worlds are going to start looking a lot more real and dynamic.

But there will be games that are technically far more advanced than the Witcher 2, in fact there already are.

I'm happy to talk about another example than TW2. Which games are you referring to?

Talking about things that don't exist is not particularly productive. The PS4 technology stack has been arround in the PC for years now - if there is nothing, not even a tech demo of some sort that can show us, today, how this amazing tech is going to look, then I think I'm justified in my belief that it won't look that amazing at all.

Games take 2+ years to develop GCN the GPU arch used in next gen consoles debuted early last year there isn't really anything that takes advantages of the fetures that it offers. But if you want some tech demos you could watch

We won't know what devs can do when they abandon the shackles of last gen and older PC tech which won't be until late next year

Cheers, I'll take a look (at home tonight, can't access youtube from work).

I'd say:it does not matter how much more powerfull a pc is,as long as you don't have the money to use this ressources.
Another problem:As soon as 3d games look really good(and they will with the next gen) noone cares about specs.
You can have a 1mio x more powerfull pc -the game won't look much better than a real good looking game as there s not much room for improvement when games look really good.

What some really are missing to unterstand is, that you don´t need a high-end PC to outclass all next-gen systems, actually they are more affordable than a comparable PCvsconsole system in beginning of the last gen.

Something that will be even more obvious in the next years, because you know, like most people won´t be early adopters you also don´t have to buy a new PC this year. The difference will be that while the consoles will have the same specs for the whole generation (5-7 years). People who´ll buy a PC in 1-2 years will have even more advanteges.

If you consider that PC versions of multiplattform games are cheaper especially at launch. The price argument isn´t as favourable to consoles as somewant you to believe. Especially for hardcoregamers that actually buy a lot of games.

We have a very long way to go to achieve photorealism.

Are we talking about a PC of the same cost as a console? Or the average gaming PC whatever that may be? Or the most powerful gaming PC possible?

Kind of a vague statement in my opinion.
