Forums - General - Shel Silverstein Books are banned in schools? What the he*l is wrong with people!

I can totally see religious fundamentalists and angry feminists joining hands to ban some guy who worked for Playboy. Honestly, I can't even tell the difference between the two anymore.

They still read books in school?

I didn't know so many books were banned, Mark Twain, Alice in Wonderland at the top of the list.
Looks like a good reading list.

thanks for reminding me to get copies of thses before my son is born

Good. Banned books are more often seeked out because they're "edgy," meaning more kids will be able to enjoy his great works. Would Harry Potter have been as big if the churches weren't up in arms about it?

The US can be such a silly place sometimes!

I live in a very conservative, religious area. And yet, I surprisingly found when I was in high school, they ban very few books. Many books that are frequently banned in other places were actually required reading for me, such as "Of Mice and Men." In fact, the majority of books I had to read show up on this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_commonly_challenged_books_in_the_United_States and I am thankful for that.

Banning books is just plain wrong.

that's such an awesome perspective, completely agree. Funny story, my gf gets me to do all types of things just by suggesting i shouldn't (and not do it by suggesting i should). She's a psychologist. Unrelated but, I believe it's why banning drugs makes drug abuse worse.

Call of The Wild? What the hell I read a bunch of these books in school. The Pigman and The Outsiders? There is absolutely nothing wrong with those books lol. The Outsiders is a fantastic book.

I think the idea of banning any book is ridiculous. No idea is so evil that you have any right to stop people from ever hearing it argued.
