Because I was curious, I went to the website Gamerankings and looked up the top rated game remakes of all time, based on games with 10+ reviews. Now, it's hard to define a remake as opposed to a port or HD version or whatever, but I think these results are interesting nonetheless.
- Persona 4 Golden (Vita) - 94.16%
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - 93.96%
- Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA) - 92.25%
- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC) - 91.21%
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U) - 91.02%
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable (PSP) - 90.77%
- Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA) - 89.89%
- Resident Evil (GC) - 89.75%
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (360) - 88.79%
- Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) - 88.41%
- Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (PSP) - 88.26%
Games like Super Mario World for the GBA and Chrono Trigger for the DS are not counted because I felt like there wasn't enough of a difference from the original games.
Anyhow, let's look at these results.
- It is obvious that handhelds are the natural home of the game remake. 8 out of 11 games mentioned above are handheld games
- Zelda games make for great remakes, with 3 of the top 5 games being Zelda titles, including the just released Wind Waker HD.
- Many remakes are of RPG's, with 4 of the 11 fitting in this genre. Action-Adventure follows it up, but only thanks to Zelda's strong prescence.
- There are 6 remakes on Nintendo platforms, 4 on Sony handhelds, and one on the 360.
- Although some remakes are made fairly quickly, like Persona 3 and 4, others, like Metroid, are made well over a decade after the original.
- Half of these titles are first party Nintendo games, while there are no Sony or Microsoft first party games on this list.
- The Vita remake of Persona 4 scored better than the PS2 original, as did the PSP versions of Persona 3 and Final Fantasy Tactics and the GameCube version of Resident Evil.
Any thoughts?
