Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii U even Powerful Enough to Handle GTA V?

Can it? Obviously yes.

Would it if ported? Probably not very well given the game engine design and resources allocated to the PS3/X360 that would not be carried over to a Wii U port.

Yes it can DUH, but the cpu on wii-u being weak would off set any extra ram it has, GTA is massively CPU bound. GTA 4 killed PC cpu's when it first came out.
The wii-u is only about on par as current gen with more memory, better gpu but a weak CPU whcih bottlenecks the system.

It wasn't the lack of power in the PC CPU that caused problems, it was the shoddy programming.

Proof? Gtais a complex game with traffic algorithms, and is cpu heavy, so i disagree. one of the most advanced games on the market, maybe the most complex engine.. Sorry disagree, gamers are too quick to say "BAd programming". I don;t think you realise exactly how massive a project like a GTA game is.

here is a quote from a developer working on wiiu that really goes into detail about the wiiu hardware

Overall the hardware itself is slightly faster than the other current-gen consoles. One very nice advantage the console has is the additional usable memory you have. Having that extra memory made development much easier compared to other current-gen platforms.

There are quotes saying the opposite, lets not play this game. Some devs play the PR, not surprising. Either way the diff between wii-u and current gen is minimal.

Why wouldn't it? Its more powerful, and if they took their time, the game would probably look better due to taking advantage of the more modern feature set of the GPU, even if the slight raw power advantage is ignored.

As for people saying that the "CPU is less powerful" or "the RAM bandwidth is a bottlenck", what exactly are you talking about? For the CPU, if you compare SIMD units, Espresso doesn't have a "real" one other than paired singles (PS360 CPUs have heavy SIMD uses) so I guess with that metric sure it's "less powerful", but in terms of integer and GP, Espresso blows both of them away. As for the RAM bottleneck, well...don't talk about something that doesn't exist.

You clearly have no idea how systems work................and yes the CPU being slow is a bottleneck, especially in games like GAT that are heavily CPU bound. Try putting a fast GPU and lot of memory ina  PC with an outdated CPU and run benchmarks on games, the CPU holds back the rest of the system. This is wll known to PC gamers for years. A quick google search of benchmarks will show this.

The converse would be the say the CPU's in the Xbox and PS3 are suprior to today's most powerful consumer grade CPU's.  Are you really suggesting that the Xenon CPU is more powerful than even modern CPU's (which still struggle against GTA IV)?

Modern? GTA 4 came out in 2008..................And the PC version was a lot more intensive. They increased traffic, draw distance, textures........................... Pc cpu's were faster then cell and xbox 360 then were not that common in most PC's.

I agree with you, it is very minimal, but the extra ram does help a lot. here is a quote from a developer at neogaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=82709349&postcount=10302

I know that some people has problems with wii u (porting games, the same games that runs fine in ps360 without any optimization), others not, etc, depends on the game and the things you need to do. I know that this info is not very relevant, but I can't give you more details.

that tells me wiiu is weaker then 360/ps3 in some ways.

Yes, modern. As in even many modern CPU's still have trouble running the game.  I've seen quad and 8 core CPU's clocked to 4.5 and higher still have trouble with it.

Well it's been fun, but now the thread is entering the cycle where these pointless threads always end up.

We're just going to save ourselves a lot of pointless arguing and lock it from here.

It didn't help that the OP was just a "everyone knows its yes until that one guy says no and starts a never ending cycle of bitching" thread to begin with.

*salutes*

Are there still people going on about this? How Wii U is less powerful than PS360? I refuse to believe they are people so stubbornly ignorant. There's just no way, I thought we were well beyond that point, now.

It's not a thought, just look at the specs. The GPU is better than the PS360 but the CPU's a huge bottleneck.

To be honest, Wii U owners shouldn't even want to see GTAV on the Wii U. The tone downs they'd have to make would hurt the game.
