Forums - Sony - TGS 2013: Sony Confirms 5 Million PS4 for FY2013

If Nintendo can get Mario Kart 8 out before the end of the fiscal year (meaning squeak it out by Mar. 2014), I think there's a healthy possibility Wii U could be in the 7 mil+ range by then, and counting. Especially if they surprise everyone and do an MK bundle. On the other hand, I honestly don't think even at $400, that the PS4 will sell 5 million by Mar. 2014.

Time has already proved me right. people buy videogames for games and so far, the absolute most of what's available on ps4's first months will be available for already existing platforms = not much insentive for many to switch to ps4.

How can something that has not happened  yet prove you right? Is that some kind of twisted ZEN logic? The games will be better on PS4, and there are games you can only get on Ps4 not ps3...The demand is there. Sony has games, so your point is moot.

It is well within reasonable limits, this sales prediction. You're just against it because it's a sony console and not the wii-u. All signs point to a wildly sucessfull PS4 launch, and demand will remain high for a long time.

"It is well within reasonable limits, this sales prediction." WHO SAID IT WASN'T? THROWING PERSONAL OFFENSES WON'T HELP YOU HERE.

in case you were too busy to notice, I already claimed those numbers are doable. but upon hearing a comment saying "sony has the games to guarantee it", I had to disagree because of the aforementioned reasons.

"All signs point to a wildly sucessfull PS4 launch, and demand will remain high for a long time." NO. All sign point to a sucessfull launch followed by a big drop after holidays. the reason for wich post holidays demand shouldn't be that high was already explained (most games on ps4 being available elsewhere.

This has been the case for nearly every console that has ever launched, not just the PS4.

Sony didn't sell 50 million consoles at $600 dollars.  You know price cuts give console sales a boost for those that where on the fence about buying.  The real factor about the PS3 was Blu-ray.  Being fairly new at that time, and what Blu-ray players cost in stores made the PS4 look like a steal even with its high price. Sony has nothing like that too help sell the PS4.

I know that, that does not negate my point though.  There is a snow ball effect when it comes to video game hardware sales.  600$ system won't sell well -> few games are made for the system -> won't sell well.   PS3's big advantage was brand power and blu ray.  Though I wouldn't say blu ray was that big of an advantage, it was still going up against HD DVD at the time.  In fact PS3 probably saved blu ray rather than the other way, because at the time HD DVD was a huge competitor and had a lot of exclusives for movies that blu ray didn't have.  So PS4 probably is even better being 100$ cheaper than the Xbox One than the PS3 was being cheaper than blu ray players.

That was Sony selling pitch, "PS3 with Blu-ray player".  It's delusional to think Blu-ray didn't play a part.  Yall problem is cause Sony won two generations, think it will always win.  Sony lost this generation to the Wii.  All consoles have brand power is why there's fanboys.

the people who will buy the ps4 in 2013 are the ones who would get it regardless of price or lineup.

the aforementioned few people are the ones besides those (who aren't buying it for cross gen titles either).

It wasn't that smart of them to sell the PS4 at a loss.

Don't they keep saying "biggest launch ever"?

PS2 shipped 2.76m in the US and 2.63m in Europe over almost the same launch time period (last qtr and 1st qtr). Thrown in Japan and others and it would be millions more.

Yeah pretty sure i heard/read them say the same thing that it was their biggest launch in 20 year history or something?

Just not sure what Japan will do this time, they seem to be going off consoles a bit, but i guess with Sony waiting for Japanese games that would help. What is the data for Ps3/PS2 launch numbers in Japan ? That would be interesting to know.

and what a coincidence, nearly every console needed some time to stabilize itself after the launch period. wii was like the only one who didn't and what a coincidence again, it had an exclusive that made people rush to buy it.

I think they probably can hit it but they may have to sweat a bit. The hardware is spot on and well priced/specced and there is enough people wanting to upgrade to something new, but I think the launch lineup is fairly weak.

Then again maybe just having the best home console versions of CoD/Battlefield/NBA 2K/Watch Dogs, etc. will be enough to drive their sales.

launch =/= launch period.

Well no one can know for sure what is going to happen in the next few months. All we can go off is what people are saying, expectations, pre-orders. Sony might be talking total BS... but if they are to be believed (and there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest the PS4 has some sales potential)... then it may sell well. We cannot look into a crystal ball and see if by end of March it has done it or not.

But evidence suggests they are going to have a big launch. Can a big launch be followed by a big drop... yeah of course. But surely you can agree a big launch is better than a small launch. And a big launch has more potential to meet 5m by FY2013 than a small launch right?

At the end of the day this is all guesswork from everyone.

I hope Sony ain't getting to cocky again, but I do hope they reach that goal.
