Forums - Gaming - Gabe talks about gaming's future and hints at Steambox details coming soon!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Gzn6E2m3otg

It is a hell of a good talk about the industy, past, present, and future, and Valve's plans.  A big chunk of which revolve around thier linux initiative.  He discusses consoles and PCs, technological shifts, market shifts and so on.

Well worth a watch.

A bit too long. I only watched short snippets. Whenever I see the word Linux I get very bored.

Did he say something concrete other than praise PC and Linux? In the OP you only say he discusses a bunch of topics, but you didn't refer to any concrete opinion or statements.

Tagging for later.

Here is a synopsis, he does go into console business models and other things as well, but he was speaking today at a linux conference which is why it has more time in the talk.

Notable Quotes:
"I think we'll see either significant restructuring or market exits by top five PC players. It's looking pretty grim," he said. "Systems which are innovation-friendly and embrace openness are going to have a greater competitive advantage to closed or tightly regulated systems."

"Next week we're going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux (steambox) into the living room," Newell said.

"Linux is the future of gaming."

I'm so tired of Gabes nonsence about Linux being the future...

He pretty much spent all last and this year taking dumps on Windows 8 primarily because it includes a built-in app store and gaming hub that might threaten his own gaming service.

Well guess what Gabe? Windows 8 games so far have been a joke and you don't have to worry about that...

Gabe does have to worry about Windows 8 being a success though as it has by far outperformed Newell's expectations, with more than 110 million active users now. Also it has outperformed his expectations on his own service - Steam's usage statistics list the 64-bit version of Windows 8 is now the second-most-often-used OS with 14 percent usage share, compared with 2.15 percent for Mac and 0.10 for Linux.

Good luck convincing anyone that 0.1% of your own service's market share is the future Gabe.

Wow, great info.  I know he is always spouting off about going to Linux, but had no idea that the numbers were so low even on steam!

They said the same about Android and look what happened there

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

You can buy all kinds of fairy tales my friend from anyone that says exactly what you want to hear. Doesn't make it true.

My post is just facts and stats... no personal opinion until the last sentance.

Just click on the OS version to see the Steam usage stats - http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Win 8 combined is almost 15%.
