Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: Japan is a "soulful place" for games

I'm pretty sure blue dragon outsold lost odyssey looking at the vgchartz numbers and I would estimate the game costed at least 15 million dollars to make given that it created alot of assests to span on 3 full DVD's while also having roughly 2 years of development time. Oh and there were 2 developers while your at it. Artoon had around 80 and it was creating the ingame assests while mistwalker with a staff of about 15 at the time were the ones conceptualizing it. I have some trouble believing that blue dragon made profit with these circumstances.

I'm definitely sure that lost odyssey also made a loss and not a gain given the fact that mistwalker has experienced some development issues.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17559    (Look under "What Didn't Go Well" section of the article for more details.)

I've checked your source and read it entirely and there's nothing specified about having bad sales. Problems with coordinations, but bad figures aren't anywhere to be seen. Lost Odyssey was one of the best-selling JRPGs - along with Blue Dragon - of the seventh gen, only behind Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles, speaking of exclusives (and maybe Xenoblade as well).

Cry On was a project of Mistwalker, without the help of Microsoft unlike BD and Lost Odyssey. Microsoft can't stop a project they don't own. The reasons of this cancelling was due to Mistwalker assimilation of the poor market conditions and the fact that they knew the game wasn't going to sell well. Check it here.

Oh 0_o I didn't know that cry on was funded by mistwalker and AQ interactive themselves but why is it a x360 excluseive ? (On another thought I have to possibly answer the question. I think it's Hironobu Sakaguchi distaste for ken kutaragi and sony go see this http://www.1up.com/news/hironobu-sakaguchi-doesn-ken-kutaragi)

I was about to tell you that xD Sakaguchi has some kind of problem with Sony, or the Ps3 in general. Perhaps that might change with the Ps4 now that Ken Kutaragi is not longer around.

One more thing about sony is that I highly doubt that they will ever fund mistwalker for an exclusive because ff the spirits within bombed soo hard LMAO.

Edit: I guess that means mistwalker is going to keep making crappy surfing games on mobile platforms.

To a lot of people it might not be worth for Microsoft to invest on Japan.

But you have to remember - you dont sell out your products and become popular over in one day or in this case one or two generations.

I'm sure the 360 sold more than the original Xbox did. If MS can play their cards right in terms of exclusive deals (not timed) and provide their own services/features that the competitors might not have this could end up providing them a boost in sales.

They might not sell as much as they do in other regions or not sell as much as their competitors but it is still a place for them to invest some units and services on because some people will be willing to buy their system and its better than giving the competition a easy win/takeover on a silver platter.

Then microsoft needs to start aquiring more japanese publishers like capcom or namco or sega because they are sitting on an a$$load of money.

"Japan is a soulful place for gaming--which is why we're proud to announce Dream Club C+ Omega Party X My Little Sister Can't Really Be This Cute: Hot Springs Holiday for the Xbox One and Kinect 2.0!"

And Boom, the xbox one sells 5k per week..

I really can't understand this hatred towards Xbox, Japan got plenty of those titles exclusive on Xbox, Online Monster Hunter, so basically the first HD episode saw the day on it. And yet Xbox brand is doomed in there. I am actually wondering what should I do if I were the CEO of Xbox Japan Devision..

Urgh, I don't care at this point. The good thing is, since the X1 is region free, I can finally import those wacky yet funny Japan-exclusive games! :P

i always wondered do they get at least english subtitles in them though ???

Why is Sony there? I thought that Japan isn't a launch country for the PS4?

Depends on the game. There are several ones that do include english subtitles for some reason. (Those who were supposed to be localized but ended up being Japan only). I wanted to play a share of those with the 360, but I can't since the 99% is region-lock. Now I don't have that problem with the Xbox One!
