Did not really work that way for me, or my group of friends (anecdotal yes). When XII came out we thought that it might even top X, and when X came out we thought it was the best game ever. VII was most peoples favorites though. Even now though FFXII does not get a lot of praise but I still think it was a pretty good FF.

Now when XIII came out, I scarcely remember anyone liking it. My roommate started FF on XIII and he hated it and all FF games based on that one experience. Me and a few other people kept telling him to try any other FF game and he tried VII and enjoyed it. I am sure a lot of people did like XIII though.

@ OP: I liked FFVIII the best, and disliked FFXIII the most.

FFXII was a great game, if not superb by FFXIII's standards, however it never quite had the FF feel for me, open world battles, MMO style gameplay just wasn't the same as what I'd experienced before.

Also, I can't see why people are dissing FFVIII, especially as their reason is 'Draw' part of the magic system, if you play the game right, Draw is not even a factor, it's about GFs, making them learn abilities. Get a GF to learn certain abilities and you never have to draw ever.

For my part, I don't dislike VIII for the draw system, but because the junction system, combined with the leveling system, renders most of the game pointless.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

13 and 13-2 have the worst characters and I played all from 7 on up. The characters got extremely feminine.

But Lightning way WAY more manly than Vaan, even though she's a chick :p

Human contact, the final frontier.

To answer OP, definitely XIII/XIII-2. Lots of terrible characters and crappy RPG elements. 13 especially was disappointing, FF13 along with MGS4 and GT5 were the three games that were my most anticipated coming into this gen.

FFII and VIII are the only ones I find "bad". They're just outright broken. In FFII, the system is a major pain in the ass and requires grinding and guest characters will always be underleveled. VIII just allows you to break the entire game with little to no effort. It's the only case where leveling up does not help you =P

Sure, sure. I CLEARLY remember that when FFXII came out, people HATED the game. "Worst FF ever", "Killed the series" and stuff. XIII won't become "amazing", but it's gonna be considered a "decent/good" game, while FFXV will be "awful". Just wait.

And by the way, here's a hint to the newcomers: the whole FF series as a whole can be very polarizing. I find VI to be massively overrated for example. Just because everyone hates II, VIII ou XIII, doesn't mean you should not play  the games. Play them, you never know. Although I really don't see anyone liking FFII nowadays, it's very dated...

And to the haters: stop stating XIII is ARGUABLY bad. You despise the game based on design choices, that others might not care or even - gasp - like. In fact, objectively and technically speaking, FFXIII is actually a good game. All the rest is opinion. Just had to get that off my chest.

I'm talking about the internet rather than the "real world". As we all know, internet is a nest of hate. Out of all my friends who have played XIII, ALL OF THEM enjoyed the game. But really, in 2006 I was insanely hyped for FFXII, and got hooked as soon as I started playing. Then I found out a lot of people hated the game (if XIII is bashed for linearity, XII was bashed for forgettable story and characters... which I kinda agree), and was rather surprised.

Edit:

Allow me to open a parenthesis here: from what I understand, this overrall mentality of "the most recent entry is the worst" seems to happen on the Zelda fanbase as well. I'm not a Zelda fanatic, so it's just a guess really.

Final Fantasy VIII, because it defies logic, patience and sanity.

Final Fantasy XIII was bad, and didnt deserve those sales it pulled.

Vaan oly starts final fatasy 12 by the end he is not even close to the main character , and I love the semi-open world it. The battle system is the best of the series.
