Forums - Nintendo - about 70% of DS sales came under $130

I know wikipedia isnt the best source but according to it the DS Lite sold 93m, DSi-28m, DSi XL-12m. It doesnt state what the original DS sold but the DS family as a whole is at 153m so from that we can assume its around 20m.

DS debuted at $149 in November 2004, in August of 2005 it got a $20 price cut bringing it to $129 and according to Vgchartz it was around 6.5m at the time of the price cut meaning it sold about 13m at $129 or below.

DS Lite launched at $129 so all 93m of its sales are at that price or below.

DSi and DSi XL launched at $169 and $189 but in May 2012 the prices had reached $99 and $129. Ever since that price cut occurred, DS has sold about 4m bring the total of DS sold at $129 or below to 110m or roughly 70%.

I find it intersting because 3DS is still $40-70 above that price point and has sold over 30m. The 2DS is launching next month and will finally reach $129. Does this mean 3DS family will be able to come close to DS at this price?

I personally don't think it'll reach the 3DS, but it will definitely sell a lot.

I never heard of this August 2005 price cut before. Especially when the 3DS price was cut in August 2011 and everyone cried, "DOOM!! THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO THE DS!!!"

DS Lite was a big sucessor not just because of price: NSMB, Nintendogs, Brain Training and others.

2DS will sell like recently cooked panckakes! better than cold panckakes

U mean DS? I think 3DS will probably be about 120m

What % of its lifetime was it under $130. Also it was under $130 within a year.

They aren't comparable situations, just like the $199 magic prophecy of exploding sales for the PS3 wasn't comparable and was never going to happen despite constant mention of it.

Ya I know, just thought it was an interesting fact and wanted to see what others thought about it.

That's not really a valid way to look at things. The DS was $130 or less for most of its life cycle so of course most sales came from lower priced models. People said the same with the PS3 ("PS2 sold 70% of its sales at $199 or lower, therefor the PS3 is going to sell 120m units lifetime"). That's mixing cause and consequence to some extend.

Edit: After reading your answer to Kowenicki - of course you are right the lower price point will help the 3DS. Nintendo handhelds in general need low price points to attract consumers. Nintendo *is* big among kids and teenagers and those have less disposable income and thus want low price handhelds. Don't know why people make fun of this.

Gets announced, nobody "gets it".
Lanched in november
Got a price cut next August.
Price cut by about 15%
Became the most sucesfull hardware ever made by nitnendo

If anyone can turn things around, this one gotta to be nintendo.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Well there's also inflation and all that to consider. $130 in 2005 or so isn't the same as $130 in 2013, so in comparison 2DS is actually going to be quite a bit cheaper than DS Lite was at the time it exploded.
