I am in that category. I'd always bought a Nintendo console until the Wii era, but I haven't primarily gamed with the Nintendo platform since the SNES era.
If you understand anything about good game design, you appreciate Nintendo games. Now you can have a million other feelings about their various business policies or place in the industry.
That's kinda how I see it.
If you plan on getting a Wii U someday and refrain from defamation then you are a Nintendo fan. I think of it like friends. If you are a friend, you don't talk smack, you find time. Owning a 3DS doesn't mean you're a fan, you just didn't have much choice.
Too many call themselves Nintendo fans right before the word "but", so no..my answer is no.

I don't see why not, I'm a Sony fan but not a Sony gamer. I make an exception for inFamous, but that's all.

Everybody on Reddit/Gaming: Nintendo is awesome guuuys, respect Nintendo, only Nintendo makes good games (plays Skyrim the rest of the day and never plays any new Mario or Zelda).

Respect doesn't mean you need to stick around. Some people move on, but always remember their gaming roots. As gaming evolves it happens. Nintendo was my primary brand from four years old until I got into middle school. The OP's description describes a gamer like myself who is a Nintendo fan, but not primarily a Nintendo gamer.

Friends don't always have time, and friends don't always agree with the things some friends say. Some of even the best friends grow apart but when they meet back up again its like they were never apart. Secondly, I am a fan of Nintendo, not a fanboy. I am don't follow companies blindly. If I see something wrong with the company i'll excuse myself from their product and hope they better themselves so I can join in. I did the same thing with all brands this generation and last generation. There was always a brand highest on my list and another that was teetering in between.
I am. I like nintendo and want them to do good. But I only play a few of their games
