I´m really curious to see what the 9th generation has in store for Nintendo handhelds (and home consoles, also extend that to Playstation and Xbox)...I wonder if it´s going to be something very different from what we´re used to.

I think a Nintendo Tablet + an optional Home dock (a lot like that Vita TV) are already heavily in development within their R&D.

Merging their handheld + portable divisions, the Wii U pad and the more tablet like 2DS form factor, ever advancing mobile chipset technology, etc. all seem to point to it.

Every now and then I see some people suggesting Nintendo should merge their handheld and home console divisions..do you think that would be a big mistake?

PlayStation Domination right there

Well their divisions have merged already (as in their R&D ... it's all unified). If you're asking me should Nintendo ditch the 2 pillar concept to focus on a 1 pillar strategy ... there are pros and cons to that.

Maybe they could create some other kind of home pillar (ie: something based around virtual reality or something).

Not surprised, can't tell you how many parents I know would rather give their younger kids their cell phone or tablet to play games. Frankly it is surprising but I don't see it as really as devastating the handheld market as some analysts seem to say it is.

The 3DS is still building its market and devouring the previous DS market, time will eventually shift it but I do believe the mobile/tablet share is probably there to stay because it is easier especially if parents don't really care or think the kids can break the device or do something that screws them.

Well one thing is for sure.. Sony's handhelds have a real problem with kids.. :P

Sony's handhelds have the mature crowd as target. Nintendo handhelds are baby sittings.

OT: Surprised to see DS that high. That's another enemy for 3DS.

The 3DS is going to sell nowhere close to the DS, so that's the worrying trend if you're Nintendo is that more kids are probably growing up with these other kinds of portable devices.

Nintendo will always have a share of the kids market, but it's definitely moving into an eroding fashion, especially as tablets get even cheaper and more and more kids keep getting their first smartphone at a younger and younger age.

I didn't honestly get my first cell phone until I was 20 years old and the only game you could play on it was Snake, lol. If you had a "fancy phone" maybe you could play Tetris on a tiny screen.

why is always everything bad for 3ds? of course it's hard to sell as much as a ds. touchscreen was the shit back then and wasn't mainstream before the ds.The ds generated the craze for touch games. as long as Nintendo makes profit with it it's successful.

This is exactly why they're releasing the 2DS

My own (step)son plays games on his iPad all the time and he has a 360 (which also gets used) but zero interest in 3DS/WiiU. On occassional he'll play a game on the Wii still but all his mobile gaming is done via iphone/ipad and he's very content with that.
