Forums - Nintendo - Will the 2DS be more profitable per unit than the 3DS and/or 3DS XL, or less?

How do you think 2DS profitability per unti compares?

Higher profit margin than both 3DS AND 3DS XL 20 68.97%

Higher profit margin than... 5 17.24%

Higher profit margin than... 0 0%

Lower profit margin than 3DS AND 3DS XL 4 13.79%

Total:29

We all know they've obviously taken some considerable cost cutting measures to get the price down to $129.99 for the 2DS as opposed to the $169.99 3DS, and $199.99 3DS XL.... But do you think it's been enough to offset the $40 and $70 drop respectively? Which model do you think is most profitable for Nintendo? Which model effectively most costly? Do you think this will determine how hard they push each model?

Speculation for fun people, I don't want to hear any "b-b-but we don't know yet!" .

2DS looks like its way cheaper to make

⇒One Screen (its 1 screen technically)

⇒No hinges

⇒3D Top Screen > Regular screen ($)

Dont quote me cuz i dont kno cost in hardware!!!

I think 2DS will profit more and sell more than the other 2 sku's, especially during holidays!

Based on the build quality, I'm quite sure they could sell it at $99 and make a profit. So, yeah, it probably has higher profit margins than both the 3DS and the XL.

They're not selling it in Japan at all, which to me indicates they might be taking a slightly lower profit margin on it (because they don't need the sales boost in Japan).

I think all the 3DS lines are profitable.

Wow, they aren't? Very interesting.

I think the 3DS XL is the most profitable.

actually they might wait For that Tokyo event to announce it! Japan will have its eyes on that show, also MH4 Direct tomorrow. You never kno

I do think it is profitable off the bat. Profit margins should be slightly lower than the 3DS XL, but profitable nonetheless. The 2DS will not release in Japan or be announced as price is not the factor. Nintendo has the momentum in Japan. As a result, there is no need to offer a less profitable handheld. Momentum is needed in the Western Markets hence a lower price handheld. Nintendo is able to release such a product because of favorable exchange rates.

I actually think the profit margins will be about equal, but the 2ds MIGHT be just a little bit less profitable... Who cares.. PROFIT!
