For me it went like this:

Atari 2600 (was my father's - there was never a time we didn't have a gaming system in the house)
GameBoy (parent bought for the family around '93 - I barely remember this)
SNES (parents got for me/my sister Christmas '96 - I was 7)
GBC (parent got for me/my sister brand new with Pokemon Christmas '98 - I was 9)
PS1 (bought with my own money in '99 - I was 10)
NES (inherited an aging cousin's NES that they no longer wanted in 2000)
GBA (was supposed to get for Christmas '02 but had to wait until Feb '03, didn't get Christmas that year due to bad grades)
Wii (bought 12:01 Nov, 19th 2006 with the money from my first summer job)
DS Lite (got the Triforce Special Edition in 2008 while in college)
DSi (bought I believe in 2009 mainly so I could semi-permanently lend my DS Lite to my sister)
PS2 & N64 (bought in 2010 to expand my gaming collection, I'd played on family/friends but didn't own them)
3DS (bought shortly after launch in 2011)
Wii U (bought on launch day November 18th 2012)
PS3 (bought in Feb 2013)

At several points I've also gotten into PC gaming (2000-2005 being the biggest time for me)

I'm seriously tempted to purchase the Pokemon X/Y 3DS XL special edition or maybe wait for the price to drop on it some maybe next year (hopefully)
I eventually want to pickup a PS Vita (for its and the PSP's games) but that will be probably 2015 or so.
I plan to weigh the PS4/XB1 and pick one of them up towards the end of the generation.
