Will it be the Cloud, which let you do stuff you used to do but bigger, harder and longer. The cloud will connect all X1 together creating a super computer that will allow developers to create near sentient NPCs (for example fishes moving out of the way in Cod ghost). The cloud will allow you to save your games, play on servers and  bring your games with you where ever you go all things we could not do before.

Will it be remote play, when you are tired of playing on your 40 inches screen why not hunch over and play your favorite console games on a 5 inches screen

Maybe smart glass will be it, I don't remember what you were suppose to do with smart glass but I bet it's awesome

There is also the Virtual reality, personally I expected VR to do a big come back in gen 9. It seems like Sony are trying to get ahead of the curve with their VR headset  to bad it will fail due to being too expensive but I hope they will learn what kind of games works the best with VR and when the big three can produce cheap VR headsets next next gen they will all profit from what Sony learned. Microsoft is also moving toward that tech with their Illumini room which will offer some kind of augmented reality for a lot cheaper than a VR headset will be this gen. You can also experience virtual reality if you hold your wii U pad really close to your face you might end up blind but it's worth it.

Skype Video conference on your TV. This could be the gen where video conference become a solid feature in people's home. I am sure Sony will also have something but they need to partner with some service that has a broader reach. The fact that just about everything can integrate with Skype could be the AAA app for MS. People without the X1 will still be able to video conference with people that do, including phones and tablets, PC you name it.

Nothing, although Backwards compatibility could become an innovation again in future.

Apart from visual upgrade I see none. Cloud or smart glass are not innovation. There were being used for a few years.

with such PC like architectures (I don't see them going back to proprietary next gen) PS5 and Xbox 0 will be backwards compatible.

If VR gets done right I could see it being awesome. I have faith in it just because people seem to love Oculus Rift. If Sony were to make a high quality VR headset exclusive to PS4 I could see it really catching on. Certainly has more potential than any other peripheral including Move and Kinect that I've seen.
