Forums - General - Insurance company wants to declare my car totaled.

Well, the way it worked when hail totaled my last car was they took the average sale price of your car in your area and offered you that. So not the best, but not the worst either.

You can choose to accept or reject their offer. So it is possible to see it and still back out although I'm unsure why you'd want to take the necessary steps to repair it so it's fit for travel.

Cash out, buy something else.

I've gotten about 4k in hail damage payouts with very little noticeable hail damage occurring the second time.  I got it fixed the first time for about half of what they gave me (they gave me 2k and I got it fixed for a little over 1k).  Then another hail storm came through a year or so later and they gave me another 2k.  I didn't get it fixed since then though which sucks cause if a huge hail storm goes through then I can't claim again.  I need to get it fixed for about 1k again sometime or just say fuck it and take the risk.

Thing is, if they total the car, it goes on the title. You can buy it back from them, but the title will be permanently marked. If you really like the car, you can try to clean the shit out of it, but good luck.

Since it's totaled, you will have "Salvage" marked on the title and have to get it inspected before you can drive it legally again. Just sounds like a hassle, but I'm super lazy.

Good luck either way, never fun dealing with insurance companies. (Watch if your rate jumps after this.)

Does the car still turn on and run? Get a quote on how much it'd cost to get the roof working and strip the interior and replace it. Ask your insurance company how much they would give you if you kept the car to repair it, ask them how much they'd give you as totaled, then make a decision based on everything you have.

Ended up settling for about 500 dollars less and they let me keep the car.

Well 500 dollars gets you plenty of Car Freshners.. Joking aside if you don't have the money you should try yourself to get the seats out and the carpeting and clean them.. Give them a nice shampoo bath and get them dried good.. Double check if safety stuff like airbags and seatbelts weren't damaged

You could possibly sell it for more than they would give you. There are a lot of saab collectors. Some will pay 100$ for the hood emblem.

Since when does one have to hand over the car to the insurance company for them to give you the money?

I would say get the money and  sell the parts of the car to collectors etc.  And sell the "rest" to the junkyard.
