In XOne's case, this might be a problem, since those proprietary hard drives are quite expensive. Still, with both consoles having a 500GB HD on the box, I'm not sure lack of space will become a problem big enough that external storage needs to be used.

Back in the days, people thought the same about launch consoles.

"Xbox 360 Premium with 20 GB?! That's like 2.5 times the space of Xbox 1!I'll never have to upgrade that thing!"

"Oh shiat, PS3 with 60 GB! That's like 3 times the 360!"

You get the whole idea. I can see myself using a 5 TB drive in my PS4 in 5 years or so. My PS3 already has 1 TB.

So Nintendo's is the most progressive policy on DL game storage?

And yet no-one will mention it.

5 games a year at $60 each is $300 a year.  Maybe for you that's not a lot of money, but for me, working a couple low-end jobs and not making a whole lot of dough, that's plenty.  Most years I only spend about $300-$350 on gaming (including Xbox Live Gold).

In 2014, though, it's going to be more like $800.  'Cause, ya know, hardware costs money too.  I'm not really sure I'm going to be able to afford $300 worth of games when I'm spending so much on hardware.

So yes, bro, I do game.  I game on a budget.  It's just a smaller budget than yours.

You know that you can buy games for less than $60, right? Buy a bundle with a game and then wait for the prices to drop on some older titles. Getting a gaming PC would be an even better investment, since you can literally buy thousands of games for a few dollars each every year

I'm typically satisfied with just a handful of games every year, a few retail-size and a few XBLA-size.  If there's an X1 bundle out sometime next year with a game that I want (like Witcher 3 or Destiny), I'll jump right on it, but I'm not likely to wait around for major games to drop in price.  There are always new games coming out that I am going to want, so I can't afford to have a backlog.

As for PC gaming, I'm just not interested.  I don't want to spend time or money figuring out how to build a suitable rig, especially when I know I want a console anyway.  PC doesn't have much in the way of exclusives I want, anyway.  If I'm going to get a second platform later in this coming generation, It'll most likely be a PS4.

Did Nintendo have a choice? To keep cost down, they didn't include a HDD. So you get a HDD with the X1 and PS4.

It's just a different setup.

In saying that, it's true the X1 relies more heavily on storage due to mandatory full game installs. The PS4 relies on it less but at least you can change the internal HDD for an off the shelf part. Like Nintendo, if you want extra storage, you can supply it at your own "retail" cost. So in that respect, the PS4 and WiiU are alike. The only difference in regards to game installs is that you have to use a 2.5in SATA device for the PS4 internally, but you can use a 2.5in for the WiiU externally, which means you get more storage for your buck. Remember, this is in context for game installs only. You can still use an external HDD for the PS4 for other things.
