Did Nintendo have a choice? To keep cost down, they didn't include a HDD. So you get a HDD with the X1 and PS4. 

It's just a different setup.

In saying that, it's true the X1 relies more heavily on storage due to mandatory full game installs. The PS4 relies on it less but at least you can change the internal HDD for an off the shelf part. Like Nintendo, if you want extra storage, you can supply it at your own "retail" cost. So in that respect, the PS4 and WiiU are alike. The only difference in regards to game installs is that you have to use a 2.5in SATA device for the PS4 internally, but you can use a 2.5in for the WiiU externally, which means you get more storage for your buck. Remember, this is in context for game installs only. You can still use an external HDD for the PS4 for other things.
